Women's Lacrosse impress in promotion run

York’s 1st women’s lacrosse team will be promoted from the BUCS Northern 2A league after registering a remarkable 34-0 win over unorganised Hull. After last week’s stunning victory at Sheffield, York were keen to continue on in the same vain and neither stoop to Hull’s level, or allow complacency to set in.

The match nearly didn’t take place due to the fact that Hull arrived one player short, and it was only the willingness of York second teamers Sarah Saunders and Helen Carr to step in and play for them that Hull avoided another walk over which would have left them on -6 points.

York started the match with real focus and drive quickly notching up a 10-0 lead by the first quarter, taking advantage of some poor goal keeping. In every aspect of the pitch York dominated, fighting for the centre draw, slick passing in the midfield and accurate shooting. The Hull defence failed to keep up with the attack’s movement, especially as the majority of the first goals were from fast breaks off the centre draw.

The second quarter was similar fare, with York's attackers simply scoring for fun, particularly Liz Chan. Having established a substantial lead York looked to try some settled attack with Emily Lingard feeding the cutters well from behind. While this may have slowed down the goal rush slightly, it did mean that every attacker was getting goals with Nicola Drury and Elsie Blackshaw particularly impressing.

While Hull were unquestionably no match for York, the match was no walkover. Hull were good at getting the ball to their key players who used speedily carried the ball into York’s fan, and had it not been for a lack of composure they may have been able to get a couple back. This was not helped by some slack York defending all round as the defence were drawn high up the pitch only to be caught out on the counterattack. Despite this the defence performed well especially in the form of Carina Topham and Izzy Miller. Hull’s cause was not helped when half way through the second half they lost their 2H and had to play the last 15 minutes with only 10 outfield players.

The final whistle signalled the end of a fantastic term by the team, where the improvement in has been noticeable, undoubtedly due to having coach Chris Wainer train and be at matches with them every week. Today’s performance highlighted the strength in the team throughout all positions, with the added reward of having conceded no goals on 22 acres this term. The upcoming Spring fixtures brings the BUCS cup and another chance to chase more success.

Team Sheet: Christiana Hambro, Rebecca Chalk, Serena Franklin, Carina Topham, Izzy Miller, Allie Parisatti-Slack, Rose Morrisson, Kyra Linton, Elsie Blackshaw, Nicola Drury, Emily Lingard, Liz Chan.

Player of the Match: Nicola Drury
