Goodricke 3 – 3 Derwent
Smith (pen) Murphy O’Shea Molyneux
The second term sees Goodricke’s unique captaincy rota change hands, with Adam Leadbeater and Dan York taking over from Adam Lewis, coincidentally it also sees Goodricke’s strongest line up this year. In a hard fought encounter dominated by committed challenges, atrocious playing conditions and some dubious refereeing neither side will feel hard done by with a point. Goodricke may feel they deserved more from a game they dominated but in truth Derwent had as many, if not more, goal scoring opportunities despite their lesser possession.
Vanburgh 7 – 1 Langwith
Prince x3 Buckley Clarke Hewitt x2
Vanbrugh convincingly took Langwith apart in a one sided affair on Match Day 1. The pitch again stifled and flowing football but Vanbrugh showed trademark power and determination to round off an impressive display with clinical finishing. Langwith showed spirit but an unfortunate lack of defensive composure which was ruthlessly exploited by the efficient Vanbrugh frontmen.
Alcuin 3 – 3 Halifax
Cox Cooper Own Goal
A special mention must go out to Halifax skipper Joe Harrison who suffered a horrific leg injury in the latter stages of this match, everyone here at The Yorker wishes him a speedy recovery. The game itself was a gripping affair with Halifax posing an outrageous three goal comeback to snatch a point.
Alcuin cruised to a 3-0 lead and looked to be heading for a comfortable win before Halifax rallied and fought back to 3-2 before the lengthy injury break. Halifax then summed up the college spirit to clinch a last minute penalty equaliser despite their captain’s horrific injury. Alcuin will rue their missed chances and inability to close out the game and Halifax and console themselves with a well earned point snatched from the jaws of defeat.
James P – P Wentworth
Match Day 1 saw some remarkably good football considering the state of the playing surface and the healthy turnout personifies the fiery competitiveness that keeps college football afloat. A special thanks must again go out to the referees who gave up their Sunday to flail around a mud bath being berated by over passionate players.
Alcuin to retain their spring title this term.
Pipe down Preston...
