Wednesday of Week 4 saw York 2nds in their first BUCS league match of the term against Hull. The away side were eager to prove themselves after a nail-biting draw against Hull last term, and entered the match with energy and enthusiasm.
The first quarter saw the attack working seamlessly in the goal third, with both Camilla Hampton and Lorna Davies-Colley making some fantastic feeds into the circle. The pair worked tirelessly together covering the circle edge and frustrating the opposition. The shooters' movement was just as lively and the partnership of Sophia Sahin and Sami Briggs showcased some impressive and versatile shooting. By the end of the first quarter the two sides were level pegging with eight goals apiece.
The second quarter got off to a brilliant start with slick set plays, especially when it came to defensive zoning. The team's constant rehearsing of this drill had paid off when they were able to intercept the ball on a number of occasions. York’s defense put up a strong fight against some sharp Hull shooting, with goalkeeper Jo Brayshaw demonstrating some stunning leans and winning the majority of rebounds.
Going into the third quarter at 16-16, the 2nds displayed their stamina. York’s channeling down the court worked efficiently and extremely effectively, with players cutting and driving in order to take advantage of the full court. Hull evidently struggled to keep up with the new pace set by their opponents and as they tired play became more and more physical. York’s captain, Camilla Hampton, felt the full force of Hull’s aggressive play as she was thrown to the floor on numerous occasions!
Despite the increase in the number of fouls, York kept their heads and came out of the quarter victorious leading by 24 goals to 21. The final quarter saw all the team fighting for a win, but unfortunately York started to fall behind. Repossession seemed to be York’s downfall as they put every effort into winning each ball. Hull, aided by some great shooting, were able to net some points whilst York battled to stay on top. The last few moments of the game were incredibly tense with goals being scored almost simultaneously by the two sides. With the final whistle a quiet lull enveloped the court whilst the teams waited anxiously to hear the final score: York 28, Hull 29.
The 2nds should not feel too disheartened after such a close match. They proved their set plays are now working well and dodging has come on immensely since last term. Now they must remain focused on the other matches still to play as they drop to 4th in the BUCS 5B league.
