Why do you think you would be a good York Sport President?
I think I'd be a good President for a number of reasons. Firstly, my commitment to sport at York and representing the interests of sports players is 100%. Second, my experience is second to none - being on the York Sport committee for 2 years makes me perfect for the role. Finally, I'm approachable, knowledgeable and sympathetic to the needs of both sport and athletes here at York.
What experience would you bring to the role?
I bring a wealth of experience to the role. I was Tournament Secretary last year, helping to organise Roses 2008 and all the associated details, from timetabling sports to stewarding matches and sleeping arrangements. This year, my role of Treasurer has seen me get involved heavily with the financial side of York Sport, which has allowed me to gain greater understanding for how it works in both an operational and financial capacity.
How do you think Alex Lacy has done this year? Would you have acted differently?
I think that Alex has done a good job this year. He's worked to build a good relationship with Rob Wadsworth, the Sports Centre manager, as well as set up free fitness classes, and under him our membership has risen by 1,000 York Sport members. He has also created surveys to see what York Sport has done well this year, and what needs improvement. I feel that engaging York Sport members more would have helped gauge what needs to be worked on sooner, so action could be taken earlier in the year.
How do you intend to boost York’s sporting achievement next year?
One of my main policies is hiring a physiotherapist and a strength and conditioning coach. I feel that this, combined with my policies of improving the standing of college sport and taking the beginners' classes already planned further will give us a more professional attitude to sport, and hopefully see more people playing both college and University level sport.
What is the most important issue that affects York Sport in the coming year?
I think one of the most important issues is that of sponsorship and finance. The work I've done this year has let me see just how much money is spent on the clubs we have. Next year, I'd like to see sponsorship for York Sport as a whole and using this money for York Sport projects, while allowing clubs to find their own sponsors to raise money for development. I'd also like to give clubs a hand who currently struggle to find sponsorship.
Voting is already underway at http://www.yusu.org/elections/vote and runs until Friday.
