Roses 2009 Review: Cricket 2nds

Cricket 2nds opened the weekend Roses action
Tuesday, 19th May 2009
UYCC 2nd XI gained York’s opening points of the weekend with a more than convincing win over Lancaster 2 XI. Playing 2 leagues above York, Lancaster were always going to be tricky, but having lost the toss and put in to field, York dominated the bowling from the outset with Giles ‘Gilo’ Raymond taking their opener first ball.

WRITTEN BY DAN TAYLOR

York built on this fantastic start and soon Gilo had him second victim, caught behind by the chirpy Dan Taylor. Whilst Tempest was unable to adjust his line with the left-hand/right hand combination, York’s other bowlers never allowed Lancaster to rotate the strike. Gangster Kash was particularly tight off of his 10 overs and was unlucky not to add to his total of 2 wickets and an excellent economy rate. A special mention must go out to James Oldham (3-19) who bowled with great pace and accuracy and was ably supported by Adam ‘facial-hair Woody’, who would later ruin his term’s bank-balance on Gallery champagne, and Richard Hoggart. After some relatively decent resistance by the Lancaster 10 and 11, skipper Pat Sarkies finally claimed the last wicket with a little snick behind to roll Lancaster over for 141.

York’s reply got off to a slow start. Skipper Sarkies was dismissed early on and Taylor received a pearler of a yorker from an unusually chatty opening left-armer. Sensing that consolidation was in order, Wood and Steve Walwyn duly did so and in spite of the necessary slow start, the pace of the innings was gradually increased as boundaries began to flow. However, things weren’t always smooth and at 106-5, the target of 142 seemed a fair way off. However, this was a team performance and contributions from Ryan Diver (16) and Memon (14) resulted in York coming home with four wickets top spare.

Walwyn’s 46 rightfully gave him man-of-the-match (in a closely fought contest with Adam Wood) and the anonymous Adam Clark received his TFC for general bad chat. It was a superb all-round team performance against a team two BUCS leagues above. Pat Sarkies will be hoping that his second team can replicate this in the remaining season’s fixtures.
