James Tompkinson reviews an excellent pre-season victory for the York City Knights against Yorkshire rivals Leeds Rhinos
It is finally confirmed that York Ladies 1st lacrosse team has been promoted and as of next year will play in the Northern Conference 1A alongside teams such as Manchester and Leeds 1st. The promotion comes on the back of an incredibly successful season where York had an average of 20 goals a game, conceded only 24 the entire season with perhaps the two most notable victories the 34-0 demolition of Keele and the 13-4 win over fellow promotion seekers Sheffield. Added to this was the 18-0 stroll against Lancaster at Roses, the impressive run to the final of the BUCS cup and the whole women’s tournament at Dublinfest over the Easter break.
Despite this York were facing another year in a league which never really stretched them after a 12-7 defeat to Durham at the beginning of the season. It was the team’s first game together as the current squad and due to York’s late term dates there had not been the greatest of preparation and few players were at match fitness level.
The lack of stamina showed when York again suffered an incredibly close 8-5 loss to the same team in a hastily rearranged BUCS cup final. With Durham not eligible for promotion York thought it was all but certain that as runners up they would take the place, however at the end of last term it was understood that York would not be moved up, and it was only through captain Rose Morrison and her vice Emily Lingard continually appealing to BUCS that their decision was overturned, with the news only being confirmed last week.
As a result the club has been able to enter the 2nd team in the Northern Conference 2A league, and so for the first time the women’s side of the club will have two teams competing for BUCS points. However, new players are needed if they are going to stand any chance next season, therefore anybody who has ever considered playing the sport is being urged to come to the college mixed tournament to sign up or even just turn up to an open training session on a Wednesday from 1.15-3.15. Even if you’ve never played, or tried out for another sport and didn’t enjoy it, or if you came to the first practice and then gave up you should come along.
The lacrosse club as a whole is not only a hugely successful club it is also a fun, well regarded club that has socials every week along with an epic tour to Dublin along with 14 other sports from all over the country. Aside from the women’s teams there are 2 men’s team and a mixed squad and if anyone fancies getting involved in any of them now is the time. With the league and cups over all the teams are preparing for next season and that means getting as many new players up to scratch as quickly as possible with first teamers putting aside time to ensure any inexperienced player is able to improve as much as they want.
