Group 1
Goodricke 1sts 5-0 Derwent 3rds
Langwith 1sts 1-2 Halifax 2nds
Langwith 1sts 1-3 Alcuin 2nds
Halifax 2nds 5-0 Derwent 3rds
The debate will rage on as to whether tournament organiser Adam Lewis has fixed this group for the reigning champions, but for the mean time the main talking point for this group is who will get second place. A very hungover Goodricke firsts despatched of Derwent 3rds in the tournament opener with Dom O’Shea inflating his (already massive) fantasy football ego with four goals. Langwiths firsts will be disappointed with two defeats already under their belt and look certain to bow out in the group stages just as they did last year.
The battle for second spot will be between the second teams of Alcuin and Halifax who face each other in the last group game. Halifax seconds have already suffered one last day heartbreak when they lost the Spring term title to Goodricke seconds on the last day of the season. Both have inflicted defeats upon Langwith firsts so it looks like being a final day shoot out for the men of Gibby and Halstead.

The quarter-finalists from the group look pretty cut and dry with Derwent and Vanbrugh firsts slaying all before them thus far. The battle for top spot will be very important however as the group winners will be rewarded with a second team in the quarters while the runners up must face last year’s champions.
Derwent kicked off their campaign in a match that had much of what the College Cup is famed for. Goodricke seconds were deprived of their midfield ‘Tank’ as he was still in bed, the referee threw his toys out of the pram and stormed off as well as everybody’s favourite UK grime artist (is that what he does?) Anton ‘Dreamz’ Murphy getting on the score sheet. Vanbrugh and Derwent firsts have yet to concede a goal and don’t be surprised if that continues until they meet on the final day.

Perhaps the hardest group to see any clear outcome from is this group. The Autumn term winners of the firsts and seconds leagues, James firsts and Vanbrugh seconds have been drawn with last year’s finalists, Alcuins firsts. The early results have given little away with the Vanbrugh defence marshalled by disputably the best second team player of any college, Chris Schultz, holding firm against a James first team without Tam Sheriff and Andrew Emmerson even in their squad (read Missing Men article later in the week for more on that situation).
It basically comes down to a three matches, with one already being drawn. If Alcuin can get a win against the other big boys, you would expect to see them through, but this group remains the most interesting.

A group very similar to Group 1, with Wentworth firsts looking like bowing out to the plate, it is down to two second teams to battle it out for a place in the quarter finals. James seconds look like being in the box seat with the win over Wentworth firsts as Derwent seconds could only draw against Luke Fleet’s men.
Top place should go to free-scoring Halifax firsts who scored nine in their opening game, even defender Shaun Evans weighed in with a hat-trick to compound their group favourites tag.
