The teams were quite evenly matched last weekend, both strong but both showing a weaker side. Both teams lost some of their control when they were in the losing seat and that is probably what lost the Centurions the game in the end.
The game started with the Mustangs receiving the kick and they made a bit of progression in their first play, but the Centurions soon gained possession of the ball. In their very first play, a pass to Rucinski, 14, and a brilliant 75 yard run secured the Centurions the first touchdown of the game. Not managing to run in the conversions meant the Centurions went 6 – 0 up.
However, due to a very physical offensive line presented by the Mustangs, the Centurions managed to give away two touchdowns, followed by kicked conversions. This meant that by then end of the second quarter the Northumbria side were up 14 – 6. The Mustangs seemed dedicated to a running game, very rarely presenting the Centurions with pass plays. The drive of the offense line was so strong: they managed to push the York defence back every time.
York, now behind by eight points, were starting to struggle to keep their heads. They’d forgotten what it was like to lose and it seemed to be getting to them quite a bit. Their spirits were dampened even more when an interception from the Mustangs meant that they managed to secure another couple of touchdowns, both with the kicked conversions. York managed to get back a few points when Rucinski caught a deep pass, meaning another six points on the board for York. The score was now Mustangs 28 – 12 Centurions.
Determined not to give up, the Centurions started to fight back. A brilliant throw from Blades, 88, to Durham meant they secured another touchdown, and they converted it, meaning that the Centurions were just one touchdown and conversions away from a tied game. However, a mistake from the special teams meant the Centurions weren’t able to get anymore point on the board, leaving the final whistle to be blown on a Mustang victory at 28 – 20.
With not many games left, the Centurions are determined to win more. If you fancy watching the team, or even helping out and learning a little bit about the game, there is a match this Sunday, the 27th of Feb. Kick-off is at 1, but if you want to help out then get in touch.
