University of York men’s 1sts 28 - 5 Sheffield University men’s 1sts
University of York Men’s 1sts came up against Sheffield University Men’s 1sts on Wednesday in a match that was to bring them one step closer to a promotion. The pressure was on for York as they needed to win these last two matches to guarantee a chance at promotion. York 1sts have not lost a game at home this season, and this match kept up that achievement.
The first half of the watch was quite disappointing for York with Sheffield keeping much of the possession on, pushing the ball to the York half for most of the early play. However, York’s defence was strong and they managed to fight Sheffield off. After 15 minutes of playing, Sheffield managed to sneak through York’s strong defence and steal a try. But a missed conversion meant that they were not too far ahead. Sheffield’s try brought out York’s fighting side and they began to push back, closing in on the try line in an attempt to overtake in the scores, but then a shoddy forward pass from York meant that Sheffield once again gained the ball.
Later on in the first half Sheffield gained a penalty kick, fortunately for York this was missed and this gave them the chance to begin pushing for another try. A yellow card went to one of the Sheffield players for a terrible tackle and the rewarding penalty meant that York had a chance to change their lack of points, however, this kick was also missed, and the half time whistle was nearing. The strong defence on both teams meant neither was able to score towards the end of the first half, so the score was still Sheffield 5 – 0 York.
The second half began with lots of support for York, it seems the side-lines had awoken with cheers directed towards York and some jovial banter directed towards Sheffield. This seemed to wake York up and they gained a lot of field, but the Sheffield defence remained strong until York scored a brilliant drive-in try and a successful conversion put York in the lead for the first time in the game. This try, and the spectator support, gave York another push in the right direction and they managed to score another try after a beautiful run from Gabriel, and another perfect conversion.
Things could have taken a turn for the worse when Sheffield began pushing once again, and managed to gain a penalty right in front of the post. Somehow, the Sheffield kicker managed to miss this simple kick which meant they were continuing there scoreless second half. York, once gaining possession of the ball, managed to once again to push the ball to the try line, and a quick pass from a scrum meant they scored another try. The conversion sealed the deal for York, who were now winning 21-5. It seemed like York’s performance couldn’t get any better until, merely seconds from the whistle, another try was scored and the conversion meant that York left the game 23 points ahead of Sheffield. A victory to York.
