James Tompkinson reviews an excellent pre-season victory for the York City Knights against Yorkshire rivals Leeds Rhinos
In remembrance of Charles de Ladoucette, a James rugby player, yesterday his old team took on a team of Barbarians, made up from the best players from the different colleges. This is the second time this match has taken place, the first, last year, saw James College gaining victory. Yesterday however, saw the Barbarians take the crown. Here is what happened...
The sun was beaming down as James took the first kick, both teams were looking pretty confident and quite equal in size - it had all the signs of being a close match. James managed to keep hold of the ball and pushed the Barbarians quite close to the try line but a terrible pass lost them possession and allowed the Barbarian team to begin their struggle back. This action was repeated several times, with both teams coming in view of their try lines, but no one being quite able to take the ball over. It seemed that James’ strong kicks were just battling the Barbarian’s back line for quite a while, with each kick being received with a brilliant run.
It seemed like no one was ever going to get the first try until finally James, after a lot more shoving, managed to reach the line. The try scorer, however, had run quite far out so the conversion was missed. That meant the score was 5 – 0 to James. Not accepting defeat, the Barbarian team began fighting back and, seemingly from nowhere, managed to score three tries. Fortunately for James, they missed all three conversions, so the half time score ended with James 5 – 15 Barbarians.
The second half started with the Barbarians looking strong once again. James, however, turned that around when a brilliant run meant that they were able to score a try right between the post and an easy conversion meant that they were back contending in the game. However, the Barbarian side, not being ones to be held back managed another try, this time getting the conversion, which put them now 10 points ahead of James with the score James 12 – 22 Barbarians.
This was followed by a lull in the game, for quite a while it seemed both teams were tired out. However in the last ten minutes James managed to score two more tries, converting both, and the Barbarian side managed one more try but missed the conversion. Leaving the final score a very close James 26 – 27 Barbarians.
apparently matches are decided by entirely by pushing now?
Now Charlie, I know you like to dabble in the backline but we both know the scrum is the only really important bit of the game.
