York sport awards nominations

As the annual York Sport Awards Dinner approaches, The Yorker takes a look at the short-list of the clubs and individuals who will be hoping to walk away with awards on Friday 25th June. York Sports Colours will also be presented to final year students who have shown dedication to their clubs for many years.

Nominations were open this year, meaning anyone could nominate whoever they felt deserved recognition and plaudits. The nominees were then compiled into the short-list below:

Sportsman of the Year:

Stephen Braid – American football The linebacker has had an excellent season for his club in their first year participating in the BUAFL.

Will Felgate – Rugby and cricket Felgate’s fantastic performances have contributed to his teams' impressive finishes in their leagues this season.

Ian McKellow – Football The midfielder has had a magnificent season, helping his team into 2nd in the 2B Northern Conference League.

Dave Tee – YUsnow The ski captain has produced some memorable performances, including ranking 2nd at the British Universities Indoor Snowsports Championships Finals.

Michael Walsh – Pool and snooker Semi-finalist in the 9-Ball Individuals, Michael also captained England to BUCS Home Nations wins.

Sportswoman of the Year:

Charlie Bartlett – Hockey Her impressive performances helped her team to the semi-finals of the Women's Northern Conference Cup.

Sarah Fisher – Netball The first team captain’s fantastic performances have contributed to her team’s successful 3rd place finish this season.

Katharine Gracey – Fencing Has had an excellent season both personally and with her team. Gracey’s ability in all three weapons has helped her team earn promotion to the Northern Premier League.

Louise Highton – Fencing The former pentathlete has had a magnificent season contributing towards her team’s success in finishing top of their league and losing no matches in their league, while also winning the Northern Ireland and Merseyside Opens this year.

Emma Hodgson – Rugby The women’s rugby captain has had an excellent season and helped her team finish 2nd in their league.

Marlies Neuner – YUsnow The snowboard race captain has produced some fantastic performances, including taking silver at the British Universities Indoor Snowsports Championships Finals.

Service to Sport:

Sam Asfahani As Development Officer, Sam helps to recruit new members and organise sports volunteer programmes.

Hannah Barwick-Walters Hannah is President of York Hornets as well as a member of the squad.

Thomas Chatwin Thomas contributes fantastically to sport both on and off the pitch, particularly in rugby and underwater hockey.

Isobelle Miller As Tournament Secretary, Isobelle headed preparations for Varsity and Roses, amongst other events.

Alex Muntus Alex organises college rugby events and ensures they run smoothly.

Adam Shergold Sports Editor Adam writes and organises articles for Nouse.

Matt Thomas Matt is in charge of all York Sport Fundraising and helps to make events and clubs profitable.

Most Improved Team of the Year:

Canoe polo open After budget cuts and player shortages last year, the canoe polo team has bounced back this season.

Men’s cricket firsts The team produced great performances to finish 2nd in the Men’s 3B Northern Conference League after relegation last season.

Men’s hockey firsts Putting aside last year’s disappointment, the men’s hockey firsts have had a strong season and finished 4th.

York Hornets competition squad York Hornet’s second year has brought them plenty of success, including finishing 1st at the NCF Northern Regional.

Roses Team of the Year:

College football winners Halifax college football team put in an excellent display.

Men’s cricket firsts An impressive performance saw York win against Lancaster 192-188 with 3 wickets to spare.

Sailing firsts The sailing team eased to a tremendous 3-0 victory over Lancaster.

Volleyball mixed The volleyball mixed team bounced back from two sets down to beat Lancaster 3-2.

Team of the Year:

Women’s fencing firsts They earned promotion to the Northern Premier League after losing no matches and topping their league at the end of a fantastic season.

Men’s lacrosse firsts The team finished a convincing 6th after a strong season and made it through to the quarter finals of the BUCS Lacrosse Men's Trophy.

Pool firsts Pool firsts put in a very impressive season, winning the 9-Ball Championship and finishing as Runners-Up in the 8-Ball Championship.

Men’s rugby firsts They gave excellent performances but narrowly missed out on promotion after finishing 2nd in the Men’s 1A Northern Conference League.

Club of the Year:

Netball All the teams were successful in their respective leagues, as the 1st team finished 3rd, the 2nd team achieved 2nd place and the 3rd team came 3rd.

Pool and snooker With medals for both the pool 1sts and 2nds and snooker winning at Roses, it was an impressive season that saw the teams gain an outstanding 103 BUCS points.

Men’s rugby Both the 1st and 2nd teams finished in 2nd place in their leagues and the 3rd team finished a strong 5th in what was overall a very successful season.

York Hornets cheerleading In their second year, the York Hornet’s have had plenty of success, including finishing 1st at the NCF Northern Regional.

YUsnow After an impressive season, YU Snow will be hoping to keep their title of Club of the Year after winning it in 2008/2009.

The York Sports Dinner will take place on Friday 25th June (Week 9) at the Roger Kirk Centre, starting from 7:00pm. Tickets can be bought online from the YUSU shop for only £30 [1] . As well as getting to see the winners announced and colours presented, the dinner includes a drinks reception, a 3 course dinner, prizes, entertainment and a disco… it’s an event not to be missed!
