Gracey, currently 47th in the British Fencing Rankings for women’s epee, will be joining team mates Raisa Greer, Fiona Haldane, Bronagh Keppler in Melbourne from 29th September to 5th October this year. The Commonwealth Fencing Open Championships take place every four years in conjunction with the Commonwealth Games which this year are being held in Delhi, India between the 3rd and 14th October.
The commonwealths have always been a main goal in my fencing
Gracey has been a key player in the women’s team this year, regularly fencing all three weapons in matches that have taken the team up and down the country. The success of Gracey and her team mates culminated with the promotion of the fencing team to the Northern Premier League at the end of this season. This was recognised by the York Sport Committee as Gracey, and team mate Louise Highton, were nominated for Sportswoman of the Year; however they both missed out to YuSnow Captain Marlies Neuner.
Gracey commented that she was ‘delighted’ by this honour, as it has ‘always been a main goal in my fencing,’ and she has already formulated plans for her training schedule. The Fencing Club is also obviously delighted for her and wishes her the best of the luck for the autumn.
Sam Asfahani talking to The Yorker said: ‘to have Katherine represent her country at the commonwealths is a great achievement, furthermore to have one of their girls competing at this level tops up a wonderful finish for the women’s fencing team.’
