The World Cup is over for Honda and Japan.
Wednesday, 30th June 2010
Tuesday saw my World Cup wall chart take on a pleasingly symmetrical appearance as the knockout stages were completed and all the teams who have progressed further than England were revealed.

First up was Japan vs. Paraguay, comfortably the worst game of the World Cup thus far. Japan’s main man has guaranteed himself a ‘civic’ reception upon his return to Japan, but even the best efforts of Honda couldn’t produce a goal. The game finished 0-0 after extra time, and Paraguay nicked it on pens. Well deserved result to be fair, Paraguay are a better side with more ideas going forward, but the result was academic in the end because an ever more confident Spain will tear them a new one.

As mentioned above, Spain edged past Cristiano Ronaldo F.C. to secure a quarter final place later in the day. A David Villa goal was enough to settle it, and Spain are settling into a rhythm that makes them massive contenders for the tournament again. Carlos Quieroz, meanwhile, remains marginally more popular than Hitler. He’ll be out of a job soon. I’m also out of a job as of today, so if anybody is reading this and is in need of staff, give me a shout. I really can do anything.
