Get involved: K - Z sport at York

Whether you’re a fresher just starting university or you’re a student in your final year, it’s never too late to get involved with a sports team. It’s a great way to make friends, stay fit and have fun. At the University of York, there are almost 60 sports to choose from, ranging from the traditional football and netball to the more unusual ultimate frisbee and pole exercise, so there is something for everyone! There are teams at college level for those who want a more relaxed approach but there are also university teams for more advanced players.

Karate: Karate: the club trains over three times a week in the Shotokan style and welcomes people of all standards.

Karting: Karting: the club uses both indoor and outdoor tracks throughout the North East and welcomes all abilities.

Kendo: Kendo: kendo is Japanese fencing and involves physical and mental strength, as well as combining marital arts and physical elements.

Lacrosse: Lacrosse: there are two Men’s teams and two Women’s teams and a mixed team which accommodate all standards of players.

Mountaineering: the club offers traditional climbing on crags and climbing walls as well as bouldering and sport routes.

Netball: Netball: the club has three teams, who train three times a week and play matches weekly and the club also has an active social side.

Octopush: Octopush: played underwater with miniature hockey sticks and snorkelling equipment, the aim is to push the puck into the goal (no previous snorkelling or octopush experience required).

Polo: the club trains throughout the year at the White Rose Polo Club, which caters for both arena and grass polo, and people of all abilities are welcome and riding experience is not essential.

Pool and Snooker: Pool and Snooker: the club offers practice sessions, coaching, leagues and national events and is open to players of all standards.

Powerlifting: Powerlifting: the club works on specific power training and heavy weights training to improve strength and power for competitions.

Riding: Riding: flat work, show jumping, cross country, dressage and hacking are all offered by the club competitively and also to those who just want to learn to ride.

Rounders: this new club welcomes all abilities to join in and have fun and meet new people.

Rugby Union: [http://www.uyrufc.co.uk UYRUFC: there are three teams of all abilities and the club offers fitness and socials as well as successful teams.

Rubgy Union (Women’s): Women's Rugby: beginners and experienced players are both welcome as the club strives to replicate its success of the last few years.

Sailing and Windsurfing: Sailing: the club owns a fleet of Fireflies dinghies and windsurfing rigs and offers both beginners’ days for learners as well as the chance to compete in events.

Skydiving: Skydiving: there are progressive skydiving courses for those who want to become qualified skydivers.

Snowsports (YUsnow): YUsnow: indoor and dry-slope training sessions and recreational sessions provide opportunities for everyone and there are also regular freestyle sessions too for snow-sport enthusiasts of all levels.

Squash: Squash: this technical and fast-paced game is easy to pick up but requires good shot selection and positioning to master.

Sub Aqua: YUSAC: learn how to dive in a safe, fun and cheap environment and once you’ve qualified, there are loads trips in the UK and abroad.

Surf: YUSURF: the club caters for all level of surfers so everyone can experience the feeling of standing up and riding waves both in England and abroad.

Swimming and Water Polo: take part competitively or just for fun in the thrice weekly training sessions at Archbishops Holgate School, just 15 minutes from campus.

Table Tennis: Table Tennis: players of all standards can improve their shots and skills and play either competitively in BUCS or just for fun.

Tae Kwon Do: Tae Kwon Do: this Korean martial art builds up fitness, flexibility, discipline and confidence and is practised one-on-one semi-contact free sparring.

Tai Chi: this is a Chinese martial art normally practised for its soft techniques and demonstration and the club is open to students of all levels.

Tennis: the club has four teams in BUCS and welcomes players of all standards and there is free professional coaching for all members.

Trampolining: Trampolining: improve general fitness, flexibility and co-ordination by bouncing three times a week.

Trix: Trix: this is a combination of various gymnastic martial arts and often takes the form of a battle and the club is open to students of all standards.

Ultimate Frisbee: Frisbee: played both indoor and outdoor, this is fast-paced game is intense and physical, requiring speed and agility, but it is also extremely fun.

Volleyball: UYVC: the clubs caters for players of all standards and has both a Men’s and Women’s squad in BUCS leagues.
