Having taken a grip on the game early on they took a deserved lead when Tom Wilson, who started the move with a defensive header, broke from midfield into space and finished tidily past the goalkeeper. Despite continuing their assertion on the game York conceded on the half-hour mark, poor closing down and a slice of misfortune were to blame. Firstly, they allowed the Northumbria winger to cut inside, his scuffed shot fell to the feet of a team-mate who then fired past the helpless Andy Emmerson in goal.
York didn’t let the goal effect their momentum though, as they continued to play the better of the football in blustery conditions. Half-time gave York captain Dom O’Shea the chance to prepare his side to turn their possession into chances, and they responded instantly as Mark Gouland saw his shot float wide, and O’Shea himself collided with the goalkeeper as he stretched for Eddie Silson’s through ball. Silson was causing some real problems in the box but couldn’t engineer a clear sight of goal. York began to think the goal their pressure deserved might not come, but Silson slid an acute through ball to O’Shea, who found a gap at the front post to beat the ‘keeper.
Northumbria had their spell in the game in the last 15 minutes as they pressed for an equaliser, but the introduction of Andy Ramsden to form a five man midfield helped weather the storm. Committed tackling and excellent work rate ensured York returned home with all 3 points.
York men’s 1st XI have their first home game next Wednesday at 22 acres, kicking off at 2pm.
