The University of York's Women's Second XI stormed to victory yesterday, beating Sheffield University 6-0 in an exciting fixture going the way of the away team.

The Second XI is a newly formed side with freshers and new faces filling the team, so Co-Captains Lucy Horrell and Lizzie Hollins were anxious to get off to a good start. The team responded by pulling together to produce the best start to the season in years. This being a side which was literally formed the night before, with injuries and other commitments affecting the teamsheet.

The game was won in the first half with Sam Simms and Louisa Copping scoring in quick succession. Great play was seen by Kyra and Kate in the middle, with swift movement of the ball across the pitch. In her first full game for the university Copping doubled her first half tally - ending with four of the six goals scored. But the goal of the match came courtesy of a nifty reverse stick shot by Lucy Horrell.

The stunning performance gave new goal keeper Cassie barely any touch of the ball, which had her complaining at half time that she needed a chair! However, the other mobile members of the defence, such as Ella McMahon, moved up the pitch to support the goal-scoring riot that was occurring with accurate and well positioned balls. Few balls managed to penetrate the sturdy defence of Theresa Jones and Emily Scott, who remained strong throughout the game.

Man of the match went to Kyra for excellent play and rapid movement of the ball up the right wing.

The side is understandably flowing with confidence and are looking forward to a clash with arch rivals York St John in two weeks' time. If yesterday's performance was anything to go by, this match could prove to be a highlight of this year's varsity competition.
