James Tompkinson reviews an excellent pre-season victory for the York City Knights against Yorkshire rivals Leeds Rhinos
This week all three men’s teams were playing away, so the Yorker didn’t make it to any matches, however I spoke to the 1sts captain, Tom Wier, to see how he thought the matches went this week.
The University of York men’s 1sts have gained another victory, this time against the University of Nottingham Men’s seconds. The score on the final whistle was 9:5. When asked Weir told me that he believed it was a very good win against a team from the league above. He told me that the scoreline didn’t properly reflect the dominance of York’s team, as the only time Nottingham managed to get through the defence was on a mistake made in the scrum. Weir told me that he felt it was particularly encouraging as it showed how well the team adapted to the different conditions, as the team were playing on a narrow pitch which meant they couldn’t play their usual handling and running game that they favour. This week’s win meant that the 1sts are still undefeated this season so far, however, Weir told me that Sheffield 1sts were going to be a very difficult match next Wednesday, however, it’s away again, so we won’t be heading down to 22 to match the match.
University of York men’s 2nds match against University of Sunderland Men’s 1sts was a bit more exciting, leaving the final score at 31:25 to York. Weir told me that this result was pleasing as there was a last minute rearrangement of the backline. He also said that he hoped the 2nds will be able to maintain their recent run of good form into the league.
Sadly, University of York men’s 3rds could not keep up with the rest of the squad and got smashed by University of Teesside Men’s 2nds, meaning the final score was 22:48. Weir told me that although they lost, the result is still a positive one. They have got a mostly whole new team this year and the lads are still getting used to playing together, but once they have the cohesion, hopefully the wins will start rolling in.
Although both 1sts and 2nds won this week, there is still an air of sadness in the air as the rugby team have been banned from Ziggy’s for two weeks due to smashing too much glass in the champagne lounge in week 3, but hopefully we’ll see the boys there again in week 6.
