York Women’s 1sts 59-5 Newcastle Women’s 2nds

1st round BUCS cup

As the BUCS cup gets underway York enjoyed a massive 59-5 win at home to Newcastle this Wednesday. As Newcastle couldn’t field a full side the game was played 12 V 11 and reduced to an hour giving York a slight advantage, but it wasn’t hard to see that York’s fast backs and impeccable passing would see them storm through the game in true UYWRUFC fashion.

It wasn’t long after the first whistle was blown that York managed to score their first try. Within 2 minutes it was clear that Newcastle just were not fast enough to keep up with the York backs and scrum half Emma Nugent put the first points on the board with a try down the wing. This was quickly followed by a try from captain Aimee Miller as she easily found her way through a disorganised Newcastle pack to score under the sticks.

Despite York’s dominance already in the game, York needed to tidy up their passes and curve the offloading as Newcastle’s inexperienced side were turning over the ball due to careless mistakes. But York continued to pile the pressure on Newcastle which resulted in a try by forward Sarah McLoughlin as she powered over the whitewash bringing the score to 15-0. Another quick break by Miller saw her sprint toward the line with a number of Newcastle players hopelessly trying to stop her, so another try and conversion for York.

Newcastle’s problems seemed to be mounting up, they weren’t quick enough to fan out their defensive line and slopping passing allowed for a couple of interceptions. However, York were a little untidy in defence and they were letting numerous balls to be turned over by the Newcastle side, and soon they weren’t able to turn field position into points. But before half time Yorks Fiona Parr managed to get another try down the wing taking the half time score to 27-0.

The second half saw an altogether better game of rugby, York tightened their defence and made better passes and similarly Newcastle started the second half with a wave of new found confidence and they put everything into defending and tackling. The first break of the second half came from the Newcastle scrum half, running solo for their first try but was stopped in a huge tackle by Miller. York began to use their space a lot better too, fanning out wide and brilliant passing throughout the second half between Amee Wilson and Aimee Miller translated into some brilliant tries.

Wilson’s good footwork got round 2 Newcastle players to get her first try of the game, followed by a great offload from Miller to Emma Nugent to score again. The game then came to a bit of a standstill, with both sides strongly defending and attacking York found themselves stuck in the Newcastle half without being able to score. Eventually Miller managed to get herself over the line once again and converted her own try to get the score to 47-0.

With 10 minutes left, Amee Wilson found herself over the line 2 more times, and a last ditch attempt for Newcastle to get some points of the board meant the remainder of the game was spent in Yorks half. An almost try from Newcastle’s 15 gave them the confidence to power through and eventually managed to score their first and last try of the game, putting the final score at 59-5.

Overall it was a great win for York, although I don’t think the score line shows their true potential, Captain Aimee Miller said "Overall really good match, difficult at times but we did well to get it together. Hopeful for the coming matches in the season". Hopefully we will see some more impressive score lines in the future.
