The Rugby Review: Week 6

Rugby Ball
Sunday, 21st November 2010
Written by Bryony Holleran

University of York Men’s 3rds were beaten by University of Leeds Men’s 3rds this week; the final score was University of York 5:38 University of Leeds. I had a chat with James Arnold, a 2nd year who only joined the York University team this year after playing for Alcuin College last year. He was very disappointed by the defeat, but told me that he felt that the team were playing a lot better together recently. Hopefully, if they keep working at it, improvement is on the horizon. It’s not easy for a new team to do well so early in the season, but I hold out hopes, we do not want a demotion on our hands.

I managed to brave the winds and chill to watch the University of York Men’s 2nds take on the University of Durham Men’s 3rds. Although a feeble looking team, Durham should not be underestimated, they are very talented. I was shocked that these were the 3rd team; their play was very professional and they gelled well as a team.

This was the first time I’d seen the new York 2nds line-up, and I have to admit I did have my doubts, a lot of the 2nds from last year had moved up to the 1sts and a lot of new players had been brought in, but I was pleasantly surprised. The team was well and truly playing as a team. I was unable to find out all the names of the new players, but I especially liked the new blindside flanker (Number 6), as soon as he got the ball he was off, no one on the Durham team could stop him. Sadly, Durham managed to sneak the first points just 13minutes into the game by a cheeky drop goal putting them ahead 3:0. York, not being ones to be trampled over, fought back, with strong scrums and some quick runs; they managed to slam a try just four minutes after Durham’s first point. Unfortunately, the try was quite wide and the conversion was missed.

However, York’s spirits could not be dampened, even with the cold, and one player running off the pitch with the bone from his thumb sticking half out, asking if anyone had a car and could drive him to the hospital, the crowd was still cheering in favour of York. Even though York lost both matches of the day, I think the fact that they had so much support from the sidelines makes up for it. Also, spirits were high due to the impending return of the rugby players to Ziggy’s later that night.

As for the first team, they were left stranded on the sidelines after Liverpool failed to turn up, claiming that the match had been cancelled. They became cheerleaders for the day and stood shivering in their shorts throwing out words of support for the 2nds.

The broken thumb was possibly the most disgusting thing I've ever seen

'Also, spirits were high due to the impending return of the rugby players to Ziggy’s later that night.'

Seriously, there is more to a rugby match than the social that is to follow the game. A return to Ziggy's had no effect on us players whatsoever.

If the social was at Ziggy's, I would think that should do the opposite to raising anyone's spirits.

Do you actually know anything about rugby? This is so poorly written, it hurts to read.

Its a rugby review, kind of a blog for the matches this week, rather than the reports that they used to do at the yorker.
