Surprisingly, there is only one all-Premier League tie: Liverpool will take on Manchester United at Old Trafford for the first time in the Cup since 1999. Sir Alex Ferguson’s men have won seven out of eight previous meetings and Liverpool will be looking for revenge for their loss against United early this season.
Cup holders Chelsea host struggling Ipswich in a game they will want to win to keep their treble hopes alive. A tough encounter sees Leeds travel to the Emirates to face Arsenal while Leicester play Manchester City, with manager Sven Goran Eriksson pitched against his former club.
Five non-league teams have performed outstandingly and made it through to the third round draw: York travel to Bolton after impressive wins over Rotherham and Darlington, while Dover, in the Blue Square South, face Huddersfield, who are three leagues above them. The three other non-league teams face second round replays but have promising draws ahead should they win. The winner of Brighton against FC United of Manchester, formed by Manchester United supporters in protest against the Glazers, will host Portsmouth, while Crawley face Swindon again, with the winners to play Derby. Droylsden take on Leyton Orient again before the winners travel to Norwich
Matches will be played over the weekend of 8/9 January 2011.
