James Tompkinson reviews an excellent pre-season victory for the York City Knights against Yorkshire rivals Leeds Rhinos
“We were on top for pretty much the whole first half after the sending off” said Remington, “but we just couldn’t nick a goal, similar to the Northumbria game in the first half really.” This looks like becoming an unwanted theme for Remington’s side this term, but with Jeroen Oomen acclimatising to the striking role, and Anton Murphy’s fitness improving by the game, the side should become more potent as the season wears on.
For now though, the team welcomes the club’s joint top scorer, and president, Alex Richards’ contribution. This day he spanked a free kick into the bottom corner, giving York the second goal to kill the game in the early stages of the second half. However, before the sending off the away team were not finding things so comfortable, “We got off the bus five minutes before kick off and we didn’t have time to do any warm up really at all, we were rushed. I even put my shorts on the wrong way round. We didn’t really start that well, but then the game switched around ten minutes in [when] one of their players made a racist comment, threw a punch, and got himself sent off stupidly” recalled Remington.
Even with ten men, Newcastle did show themselves to be a very well organised side, “they knew what they were doing, they just put men behind the ball leaving one up top. They didn’t lose their heads after the 2 0, and fought to the end” he continued. Newcastle might claim they deserved their consolation, but the York defence will not be pleased with the manner of the goal. It was a sloppy affair with poor communication from Carl Worrall, who failed to clear from the edge of the penalty area, leaving the home striker to clinically chip stranded ‘keeper George Taylor.
Remington was quick to praise man of the match Jeroen Oomen, calling him ‘our new star’. In the second half he lobbed the goalkeeper from the edge of the 18 yard box with a fantastic finish to open the scoring. Saturday’s man of the match Simon Oatridge said, “he battled hard, he really worked. Playing with Anton up front is difficult, but he had a lovely finish and some really nice touches. Technically he stood out by a long way. He also looked lively the other day against Leeds, worked hard today and deserved a goal.”
The York second XI are a team high on confidence, but will be glad to have taken all three points from this game that never was. The 2s had only just found their feet in the game when it was handed to them by an individual piece of stupidity.
Remington was quick to shift the focus to Saturday’s fixture, “I can’t wait for Durham with Joe Brennan, Dan Sitkin and Ed Murrills back we’ll have a really strong squad. I’d love to get lots of home support, so come on down at 2 o’clock to watch us give them a thrashing!”

Not the greatest of reviews. Lacking continuity and not exactly clear as to what the actual score was.
