In a clear response to BUSA, York dominated from the outset playing with flair, skill and determination throughout the game.
Entering her second year as first team captain, Amy Smith set the standard, leading by example in centre court. Her team responded with some outstanding interceptions from Katie Brunskill and Laura Longworth.
Following the loss of two first team Goal Shooters at the end of last year, Sammi Briggs and Sarah Fisher made an excellent impact on their debut, with exceptional link up and support play to the Goal Attack resulting in a strong scoring performance with few shots missed all first half.
A solid defensive performance kept St Johns scoring to a minimum and, despite the slight lack of match fitness demonstrated by tired legs in the third quarter, the team remained motivated to hold their local rivals below half their score - resulting in no points for the visitors.
Player of the match went to UYNC's newly elected president Clare Shaw, for her competent passing and moving display, impressive interceptions and commanding centre court presence throughout the match.
Having taken care of business on the court, attentions turned to the social side of University Netball. Named ‘The Road to Ziggy’s’, this year’s initiations were a concoction of vodka, gin and UYNC spirit. The night began with a theory test, where the old girls instructed their team’s freshers on notable club legends and shenanigans. A few party games, a lot of punch and a boat race later and everyone was well in the mood for Ziggy's.
With social secretaries Tess and Laura adorning traffic light hats, we sailed past the queue, flashing our newly awarded UYNC Driving Licences. With seven players making it to the end of Ziggy’s, the night was an unmitigated success; with standards for this years socials set high…bring on the rest of the term!
