York Netball Club faces challenges from within

Netball
Saturday, 27th October 2007
As unimportant as a home match between the netball club's first and second teams may seem, the determination of both squads showed just how much BUSA matches mean to the usually friendly club.

Due to both the university top teams being in the same league this year, it was necessary for them to play each other, as they would any other university squad. Thus, yesterday’s thrilling match took place under usual strict BUSA conditions, and the attitudes of the players reflected this. The keenness to win was apparent on both sides, with the reputation of the first team at stake, and the seconds with nothing to lose.

The familiar faces in an unusual situation did not help to calm prematch nerves, and both teams started the first quarter rather shakily. However, the players soon sharpened up and some fantastic shooting from Caz Burtt and Sophia Sahin of the seconds saw them end the quarter trailing the firsts by only one goal.

Neither squad made quarter time changes, yet the firsts managed to increase their lead by a dramatic eight goals. This was thanks to the first team defence, composed of Tess Olsen, Katie Cowper Johnson and Katie Brunskill, working hard at keeping the shooters out of the D, while at the other end of the court, fresher Sami Briggs shot some outstanding goals.

Half time saw tactical changes from both teams, the seconds knowing that this quarter would be vital in trying to narrow the gap between them. The arrival of Liz Cowell for the seconds meant new energy and powerful passing, although this was not enough to narrow the ever increasing goal difference. The zone set up by the first team was extremely effective and despite superb efforts, notably by Camilla Hampton and Katie Smith, the ball was rarely allowed access to the attacking end of the seconds.

The final quarter was a chance for the first team to show their stamina and skill, with great link up between Amy Smith and Clare Shaw allowing shooters Sarah Pycroft and Sarah Fisher numerous scoring opportunities, many of which were capitalized on. This consequently increased the final score to 42-24, and gave a clear victory to the firsts.

Not only is the victory itself important, but the goal difference too. It was vital that the firsts were not complacent and they constantly tried to increase their lead, as goal difference could play a significant role in determining the end of season standings. York firsts are currently joint top of their league, but rivals Teesside and Huddersfield have amassed massive goal differences, of 72 and 97 respectively, compared to York’s 37. As they battle to stay at the top, scoring goals at every opportunity will definitely be a key aim. Netball will most certainly be an exciting sport to watch over the coming few weeks.
