Fourth seed Venus Williams retired after one game, giving her opponent, 30th seed Petkovic, a place in the next round.
16th seed Pavlyuchenkova failed to overcome her opponent, unseeded Benesova, as did fifth seed Stosur against Kvitova (25) and Peer, seeded tenth, against Pennetta (22), vastly reducing the number of high seeds in the fourth round.
