Round 4 brought about some interesting turn of events and some unexpected results.
In the men’s singles, Roger Federer (SUI) won by three sets to one, defeating Tommy Robredo (ESP), despite a shaky performance which saw him lose the second set.
Similar to this was the straight-sets win by number one seed Rafael Nadal, beating Marin Cilic (CRO), seeded 15th. And Andy Murray defeated Jurgen Melzer of Austria, with Murray keeping his 100% record of not losing a set so far, hoping to carry this knack into the quarter finals.
The excitement really kicked off with Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland demanding to be noticed. He well and truly beat USA’s Andy Roddick, who has a world ranking of 8th, winning in three sets to progress to the quarter finals.
Other victories for the men included Alexandr Dolgopolov, who defeated Robin Soderling in a tense close match of 1-6, 6-3, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2; David Ferrer beat Milos Raonio after a hesitant start but then confidently took the win; and Novak Djokovic won easily over Nicolas Almagro 6-3, 6-4, 6-0.
The women’s singles were equally as exciting, with some surprise upsets: the defeat of former world number one Maria Sharapova by Andrea Petkovic (30 seed), ending in a score of 6-2, 6-3, left both players and spectators stunned.
Caroline Wozniacki (DEN), the women's top seed, easily defeated Anastasija Sevastova (LAT) 6-3, 6-4.
In an equally seeded match between Na Li (9) and Victoria Azarenka (8), Li won 6-2, 6-3, proving she deserves to be seeded in the top 10.
Petra Kvitova defeated Flavia Pennetta in three sets, with every set being won 6-3 but Ekaterina Makarova suffered a heavy defeat from Kim Clijsters (3rd seed) with a final score of 7-6(3), 6-2.
Second seed Vera Zvonareva (2nd seed) breezed through to the quarter finals, defeating unseeded Iveta Benesova 6-4, 6-1.
Come on Murray! It will be great if he can get to the final and hopefully win - he's playing well.
