Webber had a dreadful start from third on the grid as he went into anti stall mode, this cost him five places as cars behind him swerved to avoid him. Bruno Senna ended Jaime Alguersuari’s afternoon early by crashing into him at La Source, Alguersuari’s car then bumped into Fernando Alonso’s breaking a track rod on the Torro Rosso driver’s car. Having started 13th on the grid due to a team error in qualifying, Button was also caught up in the crash, meaning he had to replace his front wing, ruining his strategy to do a long first stint on the harder tyres. Senna was later penalised for causing the accident.
Lewis Hamilton was once again involved in an accident on lap 13, having overtaken Kamui Kobaiashi through Eau Rouge the Japanese driver tried to take back the place through Les Combes. Hamilton didn’t see Kobaiashi and didn’t give him enough room, causing a collision that resulted in Hamilton’s retirement. Hamilton later admitted responsibility for the accident on his twitter page.
The accident brought the safety car out as there was a significant amount of debris on track. Vettel took the opportunity to pit meaning that at the restart Alonso lead the race with Webber and Vettel just behind him. Vettel soon overtook Alonso to take the lead, whilst Button was making pass after pass to climb up the standings.
At the final round of pit stops Button took the lead for a short period before stopping himself for a brand new set of the softer tyres whilst Alonso had a set of harder tyres on. Both Webber and Button managed to pass Alonso in the closing stages of the race which pushed the Spaniard out of the podium places.
Special mention has to go to Michael Schumacher, 20 years after his first F1 race he finished a respectable 5th, despite starting from the back of the grid after one of his wheels fell off during his out lap in the first part of qualifying. Britain’s Paul Di Resta finished 11th, just outside the points.
Vettel now leads Webber by 92 points in the Drivers championship with Alonso, Button and Hamilton all within 21 points of Webber.
