Soon UYHC came to dominate my proceedings at York. With BUCS matches on Wednesdays, Yorkshire league games every Saturday and regular indoor training there’s lots of hockey and plenty of opportunities to play. The atmosphere in the club and between the teams is fantastic, with socials providing an opportunity to get to know your teammates off the field and other faces within the club over a few pints of Kryptonite (you’ll learn!). In addition to weekly socials, the club has two black-tie events each year, a Christmas Ball at the end of the Autumn term, and of course Presidents weekend, when UYHC welcomes back Old Boys and Girls of York.
The club has a fantastic pedigree in the fanatically competitive annual Roses clash with Lancaster, winning 6 and drawing 2 in the 9 fixtures, and in 2010 the Mens 1s won the Eastern Conference BUCS cup. In the upcoming academic year all builds are looking to build upon last years season, with the Mens 1s and Mens 2 particularly seeking promotion in their respective BUCS leagues.
The club goes on tour twice a year, once in the Easter holidays where recent destinations have included Bratislava, Amsterdam and Budapest, and during the summer, where this year we attended the Old Sillhillians Hockey Festival in Solihull. Tour is a definite highlight of UYHC, one I’d recommend never missing!
Fresher’s week can be pretty overwhelming and nerve wracking, but no matter what your level of hockey is, there’ll be a place for you in UYHC. Look out for UYHC at the fresher’s fayre, and for more information about the club and trials, visit www.uyhc.org or look us up on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/pages/U-Y-H-C-University-of-York-Hockey-Club/206205542771295?sk=info.
See you in October!
Kryptonite is LETHAL! Which is probably why they called it that.
