McEwan has been in charge at Bootham Crescent since February 2005 and came within a whisker of leading the club back into the Football League.
McEwan joined the Minstermen with the club facing relegation to the Conference North. He steered the club to safety and then gradually re-built the squad, leading them to eighth in 2006 before securing a play-off berth the following season.
Morecambe denied City a dream trip to Wembley with an aggregate victory and York’s hopes of promotion were put on hold for another season.
However, York haven’t matched last season’s form and currently languish at the wrong end of the Conference table as we approach the mid-way point of the season. Pressure started to really mount on McEwan after a shock FA Cup first round defeat to Havant & Waterlooville, and Saturday’s defeat to Salisbury was the final straw for the former Derby coach.
An official club statement read: "It is with regret that York City Football Club has parted company with manager Billy McEwan."
"Billy has been instrumental in the turnaround in the playing fortunes of the club, with last season's play-off position the major highlight. However, the football industry is based on results and the club needs a fresh approach."
Reserve team coach Colin Walker has taken charge of the team as York start their search for a new manager. The club’s next outing is a crucial league fixture at fellow strugglers Weymouth.
