James Tompkinson reviews an excellent pre-season victory for the York City Knights against Yorkshire rivals Leeds Rhinos
Last week the Women's first team came back from 1-0 down to win 3-1 in a highly exciting game that saw possession move from one strong team to the other.
As the home side, York felt like this one was in the bag; all players had returned from injury and a full squad was out.
York came out strong and in the first half had around 70% of the possession. A counter-attacking move by Wakefield however saw them go 1-0 ahead towards the middle of the first half, a score completely undeserved in terms of possession and quality of play.
York battled on, never giving up, and Laura Carter scored with a brilliantly worked goal, boosting her already excellent season.
Moving on into the second half York dominated the game. Now at 1-1 the team had extra confidence and soon into the half Jaimie Unsworth struck an excellent goal into the bottom corner of the net through a short corner, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance.
York's midfield remained strong, Andrea Pisesky dominated the midfield with some brilliant runs up the middle of the pitch, working her way around several Wakefield players at a time.
Anne Coleman scored the final York goal towards the end of the match: a superb strike from the top of the 'D' that whistled past the keeper.
Woman of the match went to Anna Smith who stepped into the role of central defence when usually at left half.
