This small restaurant tucked amongst the charity shops and cafés of Goodramgate is a little treasure. Winner of York's best restaurant in 2003, their standards haven't slipped and they continue to serve up excellent British and Mediterranean food. At lunchtime you can go in and get two courses for just £8.75, or three courses for £12.25.
The Loch Fyne chain, famous for their oysters, specialise in seafood but also provide a number of less-fishy dishes. Their York restaurant is currently offering two courses for £11 and even throw in a free glass of wine. One not to be missed by fish-lovers!
Despite being within spitting distance of Clifford's Tower and the Coppergate shopping centre, you could quite easily walk straight past Rustique without noticing. Specialising in French cuisine, they offer good food, great service and exceptional value for money. Their set menu (which is available at lunchtime from Monday through Thursday) offers two courses for £9.95 and three for £11.95 including (for my money) the best Moules Marinére in York.
Despite being an all vegan, all gluten-free, tapas restaurant El Piano appeals to all kinds of people. If you fancying vegging out, you can't do much better than get yourself to El Piano where you can get several dishes for £6.95 under their Cheap Chow deal until 7pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. They also do Breakfasts for the same price every day until 5pm for those late-risers amongst you. If you thought vegetarian food was bland and left you feeling empty, prepare to have your opinion changed.
Whilst Evil Eye is best known for its cocktails and toxic shooters, during the day they also serve exceptional fusion cuisine ranging from the traditional English to Thai and Indonesian. Despite the great cooking, they don't skimp on the portions either like some places do. On a Sunday lunch time you can get a slap-up roast dinner for £6.95 or choose from any number of reasonably priced, adventurous alternatives.
Meltons 2 is a good one as well. Has a lunch time menu, two courses for around £11. Has seasonal menus. Last time I went there it was lobster week. Yum!
I know this isn't exactly lunch...but Toto's (end of Heslington Road area) do really good pizza/pasta dishes for 4.95 between 5pm and 7pm on a weekday. Definitely worth a try
