The Credit Munch

Bella Italia
Friday, 19th June 2009
So it's getting a bit tiring hearing about the "credit crunch" all the time. We can't do anything about it, and being students we're all broke anyway so really, is it directly affecting us that much? No it is not. In fact, if anything, the credit crunch is being quite good to us at the moment. With everyone cutting back on luxuries like going out to eat, restaurants have stepped up and are trying to entice us and our remaining pennies in. Eating out has never presented us with so many culinary treats for such low prices!

Here are some deals that will make you love the credit crunch in York:

Loch Fyne do a noon to early evening deal, £12 for two courses and a side dish; first class freshwater fish dishes for bargain prices. The Loch Fyne in York, compared to some others around the country is a pretty spectacular looking restaurant, with its big glass front and Foss Bridge location.

Café Rouge is a great spot for people watching on Petergate and offers a number of affordable deals. These include £7.95 for two courses, £9.95 for 3 courses, or two courses and a drink, from noon to 5pm on weekdays. Of course we all know about Bella Italia and their legendary half price Mondays, but Nineteen offers a similar deal with two for one on a select "Market Menu" from Monday to Friday. The food is very reasonable at Nineteen anyway, so really this is a steal.

Siam House in Goodramgate do a good earlybird deal Monday to Thursday. You may have walked past this restaurant without noticing it. It appears to be nothing more that a rather ostentatious golden temple of a doorway from the outside, however, it really does lead to a restaurant, and the food is excellent - rivalling Evil Eye some have controversially said! - and it is a very good price with the deal. Melton's Too on Fossgate offer a £12.50 for a two courses deal, available from lunchtime until 7pm. There are starters including asparagus, and smoked Mackerel, mains such as slow cooked lamb, smoked Haddock. A lot of the meals in Melton's Too are typically "English", but they also do tapas, and decadent breakfast food.

A very similar deal is run by The Olive Tree, with the same price for two courses. However, this deal runs later into the evening as well. The Olive Tree's starters include such continental delights as chorizo, halloumi, and crayfish, and considering the price they charge they have quite an extraordinary selaection of mains including salmon, steak, and duck, as well as a variety of pizzas and pastas.

So here is our advice. Yes, there is a credit crunch, but never has it been cheaper to eat out as a student, so enjoy these deals while they last.
