Student Calling - The York Annual Fund

Student Calling
Friday, 26th June 2009
In a little cottage in Heslington village is situated a university office that you may never have noticed, may never have heard of, maybe it didn’t even occur to you that it exists.

You’ll doubtless have walked past it on the way to the Charles, and with the prospect of 99p glasses of wine just metres away, not noticed it. However, this discreet little cottage is in fact home to the Development and Alumni Relations Office – or DARO – a powerhouse within a country cottage.

We’re not Alumni yet, it is true, so why would DARO have anything to do with us?

Well, one of the many things that DARO are in charge of is the York Annual Fund, a fund that is supported by staff, graduates and friends of the university, and which funds countless projects that go on within the university, and there are two ways that we as students benefit from this fund.

  • Firstly:

• The money in the fund supports a lot of things that directly involve students. Within the fund there is a sub-section called 'The Student Support Fund', which supports students through bursaries and scholarships for undergraduates and postgraduates alike.

• If you are a member of any club or society on campus, your society can apply to the fund for financial help.

• Anyone in the boat club? Last year the Annual Fund gave £8,000 to this club for a new Senior Men’s Racing Four.

• Did you take part in Roses perchance? Roses too received generous financial assistance from the Annual Fund, receiving £5,500 towards the smoothly run and incredibly successful weekend

• YSTV received £4,546 to renew their cameras.

• The equestrian team, NightLine, our American Football team: The York Centurions, the York UN association… they’ve all benefited from the Annual Fund.

  • Secondly:

The way the York Annual Fund raises all this money is through a bi-annual telethon, with a team of ‘student callers’, who call the Alumni, catch up with them, and tell them about the Annual Fund.

The student calling team is lead by Susie Fothergill, who Vision recently named “Unsung Hero” on their University of York power list. It’s a great place to work, good wages, and flexible hours that can fit around pretty much any timetable.

For more information about student calling, the easiest way to find information is just to type 'student calling' into the search box on the University of York website. They’re taking applications for a calling team for the Autumn term until Monday week two of next term.

To find out how a club or society you are in can apply to the fund for financial assistance, type 'York Annual Fund' into the search box and choose 'Applying for funds' from the left hand menu - all the dates and forms are there. The next deadline is Friday 6 November.

So if anyone is looking for the perfect student job, look no further than the DARO office. Next time you’re walking to the Charles, keep you’re eyes peeled for the Alumni House. It has much more to offer you than 99p glasses of wine and curly fries as cheap as chips.
