So you’ve had a busy term, been up to your eyes in work (ahem, read: partying) and have just looked up from those books (your pint) and realised it’s almost December. Everywhere you go, people are counting down the hours, minutes, seconds, until the big guy in the red suit visits, but SHOCK HORROR, you haven’t wrapped your presents yet. Or bought them. Or started buying them. Or, if we’re being completely honest here, even thought about what you’re going to buy.
But panic not, for I suspect you are not alone in your plight. If you want 2010 to be the year for breaking the tradition of soap for mum and socks for dad, our guide to Christmas shopping in York is the thing for you!
Your Mum
As well as the usual gifts from the likes of Lush, Hotel Chocolat or Thorntons, York offers some more unique idea gifts. Fudge Kitchen on Low Petergate offers gift boxes prepacked with their slices of fudge, with an abundance of flavours including Strawberries & cream and Mocha choca swirl. Alternatively, choose to personalise your box with flavours chosen by you.
Your Dad
Vom Fass is a great little shop on Petergate. Being students, and therefore being wise to the alcoholic watering holes of the city, you are probably already aware of this shop. A tad pricy, but you’re bound to be popular. Personalise your gift by picking a bottle shape to suit the receiver, then choose from a variety of fruity liquors and fine spirits. They also do a variety of cooking oils and vinegars suitable for keen chefs.
Your Grandparents
The National Trust shop on Goodramgate has a great range of presents for Grandparents. From traditional gifts of hand creams and soaps, they also have gifts for keen gardeners such as bird feed houses and grow your own herb kits, as well as jigsaw puzzles and calendars.
Younger siblings
Corky's on Museum Street sells “Special gifts for tots to teens” and caters for near enough anyone in this age range. Puppets, jigsaws, jewellery and art and craft projects amongst many other exciting goodies.
Secret Santa
Hawkins Bazaar has the ideal gift for pretty much everyone, and is just the thing for students on a budget. With a ‘pocket money’ section that is perfect for cheap stocking fillers, cheap gifts suitable for that difficult secret Santa, retro toys that your parents will remember from their own misspent youth (Bigtrak anyone?) and a cheeky section for that ‘special friend’.
