Laura Reynolds provides some tips to help you save
1. Woodstock 2011 - Saturday Week 9 (25th June)-You may have seen the Facebook group for this one already. For those who don’t know, Woodstock is a music festival held on Vanbrugh paradise, with campus bands and local bands, and raising money for RAG. Usually an amazing atmosphere, and an event not to be missed.
2. York Carnival 2011 - The theme for this year’s Carnival on 4th June is “outer space”. The Carnival is an event that takes place in the centre of the city every year with stalls in the square, performances galore and a parade from the Minster Gardens. A great way to escape the stress of revision for the day.
3. Walk the walls-because no year at York is complete without a stroll along the city walls. Great views, good exercise, and a few cheeky stops at pubs long the way (although be careful on the sections without railings if you’ve had a couple!)
4. Climb to the top of the Minster tower. One heck of a climb up there, but the view at the top is definitely worth it.
5. Cider in the Charles garden - because when the sun is shining, it would be rude not to!
6. Picnic at the Quiet Place (although not so quiet in summer)- A few friends. A Brown’s sandwich. Pimm’s O’clock anyone? Alternatively, Rowntree Park near the Millennium Bridge in town is lovely for a picnic.
7. Scarborough/Whitby - no British summer is complete without a trip to the seaside. Scarborough is a typical English seaside town, and less than an hour on the train from York. If it rains, there’s always the aquarium. Whitby is slightly further afield, but definitely worth a visit, particularly for Dracula fans.
8. Go visit the National Railway Museum. It’s right round the back of York station, admission is free, you can go inside a Japanese bullet train, plus the Hogwarts Express was once there - what more reason could you need?
9. Go cycling-perhaps not everyone’s cup of tea, but a great way to see parts of the local area that until now you haven’t actually noticed. If you’re up for a challenge, head out to Stamford Bridge-it has a beautiful village green and an amazing sandwich shop. Just beware the hills on the return journey!
10. Walk home from a night out when it’s getting light already. Throws you right out of sync for the rest of the day, but so worth it for the weird experience. Sitting on Clifford’s Tower watching the sun rise is always fun too.
