Plastic bag recycling now in Costcutter

Plastic Bag
How to stop these damaging the environment
Friday, 3rd June 2011
Any spare plastic carrier bags can now be recycled in the green recycling bin in Costcutter! Students may now drop off their used plastic bags in the bin and any undamaged Costcutter bags can then be reused directly by shoppers, while any bags from other stores will be taken to a recycling plant to be made into new things.

Plastic bags use large amounts of oil, energy and water to make and most take hundreds of years to degrade. Plastic bags that are not disposed of correctly can get into oceans and forests where they kill wildlife. So instead of throwing your plastic bags away or hiding them in cupboards, give bags a new life - reuse them or recycle them.

Also, if you order groceries on line, most companies have a bag free option, which it is worth choosing as you really don't need bags if they are delivering to your door.

Some stats about plastic bags -

  • Plastic bags cause over 100,000 sea turtle and other marine animal deaths every year when animals mistake them for food.
  • In the UK, banning plastic bags would be the carbon equivalent of taking 18,000 cars off the roads each year.
  • In the UK, each person uses on average around 220 plastic bags each year.
  • The average plastic carrier bag is used for five minutes, but takes up to 500 years to decompose.
