TV Taster: Week 10

The end is nearly here. Ten weeks of slaving away and soon months of freedom will be yours, albeit if months of freedom from York translates into months of slavery on the minimum wage. But for now, you must utilise your new couch potato status by watching the very best of this week’s television.

It is time to get the strawberries and cream out on Monday as one of Britain’s best loved sporting events, Wimbledon, is upon us again (BBC2, 5.50pm). All eyes will be on Roger Federer to see if he can achieve a record breaking sixth consecutive singles title.

The Culture Show (BBC2, 10pm) hits our screen on Tuesday with an impressive line-up. The film director Nic Roeg gives a rare interview and the writers behind Peep Show Jesse Armstrong and Sam Bain talk about their influences. There is also music from the inimitable and fantastically quirky CSS.

Wednesday’s pick is Tribal Wives (BBC2, 9pm). Businesswoman Karen spends a month in the Ecuadorian Amazon jungle with the Waorani tribe to discover what is missing in her life. The tribe reckons that she is missing a man and she soon ends up with more than she bargained for when she attracts the attention of the only single man in the tribe, Ewenginto. Over on digital, Open Hearts (BBC4, 10pm) is a compelling film that examines the intricacies of human relationships when a tragic car accident leads to an unexpected love affair.

Gok Wan has finally tired of seeing people naked and embarks on a new fashion series this Thursday (Channel 4, 8pm). Gok gives advice on how to recreate designer fashion looks using high street buys whilst co-presenter Alexa Chung tests classic pieces. If you are rolling your eyes at the prospect of another fashion magazine show then switch over to BBC2 for the penultimate episode of Heroes (9pm), where the world’s future is jeopardised by a deadly virus.

Too tired to put on your dancing shoes celebrate the last day of term? Live vicariously through your television by watching Nelson Mandela: Happy 90th Birthday (Friday, ITV1, 9pm) which sees a massive party held in the great man’s honours. It is an A-Lister event with movie stars such as Will Smith and Robert De Niro mingling with former presidents and musicians such as Amy Winehouse and Razorlight. Alternatively, the coverage of the mudfest that is Glastonbury is on BBC3 from 7pm and BBC2 at 11pm. The first day sees performances from Editors, We Are Scientists and The Kings of Leon, with the controversial headliner Jay-Z performing later on in the weekend.

It is a movie night on Saturday with a mass of choices. ITV1 airs the romantic comedy Wimbledon (9pm); over on Film4, the silly but enjoyable Independence Day (7pm). This is followed by Will Smith yet again trying to save the world in I, Robot (Film4, 9pm). Lastly, a good old chick flick is E4’s choice, showing How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days (9pm).

End your week with a couple of beers and some football with the final of Euro 2008 (UEFA Euro 2008 Match of the Day Live, BBC1, 6.55pm).
