The results show proved to be the most unpredictable seen in a good while. Miss Frank came away from their repeat of Sinatra’s 'That’s Life' (performed at Boot Camp) with a full house of approval from the judges. Danyl managed to win over the entire panel singing Nina Simone’s 'Feeling Good'. In the face of mediocre performances from Lloyd (backflip + bum notes = a befuddled and not-so-impressed viewer), Stacey (looked sensational – sounded iffy) and Joe McElderry (nailed the song, but not the sexy image that accompanies ‘Sway’), I can’t help but wonder – what went wrong?
I have one (albeit hyphenated) word for Simon – force-feeding. Sure, Danyl is pretty good and can hit some great notes. But stop repeatedly telling me that he’s the BEST SINGER EVER and he’s “in a different league” to everyone else – because he’s not. I’m unsettled, because I can’t shake the feeling that if he were in someone else’s category, Simon wouldn’t be able to get enough of criticising him. I don’t hate the guy, but because of this attitude, I took great satisfaction in seeing him in the bottom two.
To conclude my reasoning for Danyl’s near elimination, please consult the following YouTube link a.k.a. source of Simon’s song choice. To give you some context, this guy was the most hyped-up contestant on this year’s ‘American Idol’:
Now answer honestly – was Danyl’s performance really up to scratch? Could it have maybe been his singing that let him down after all...?
So what does this early bottom two appearance mean for Danyl’s future in the competition? Well, it’s a bad sign. The only thing I thought would carry this dude to the final was a set of über-die-hard fans who would vote ferociously for him no matter what. He was defined as ‘Marmite’ right – either loved or hated? Turns out Danyl is not exactly feeling the ‘love’ side of that equation.
I was more disappointed to see Miss Frank at the bottom end of the public vote: not only because I saw more originality and potential in them than most of the acts left, but because I was just more emotionally invested. Most shockingly, their departure left the winning group as...John & Edward?! No one saw that coming, especially as they went from ‘likeable’ to just plain creepy – I know they’re 18 and technically adults, but never again do I want to see them gyrating either side of a full-grown woman as if in some nightmare threesome scenario, or crawling through said woman’s legs.
As for other notable efforts, kudos to Rachel for changing her ‘already stale after two weeks’ image, even if she did come across as if she was ‘on something’ in her interview with Dermot. Simon I felt threw Jamie under the bus by giving him 24 hours to prepare and sing a not entirely well-known U2 song. Olly additionally was given an odd song choice. Is Simon playing favourites with his acts? (Well if he is, it’s clearly not working...)
Finally – what was my shocked reaction for? If anyone remotely enjoyed Westlife’s “new single” and is considering downloading it, give a listen to the original, released a mere year ago – ‘What About Now’ by Daughtry.
