Gilmore Girls was more than just another American teen show in the style of One Tree Hill or The OC. Although main characters from both shows earned their stripes on the 7 year long series. Its use of pop culture references and bizarre linguistic feats gave it an extra dimension in terms of watchability, and to my knowledge anyone who has ever sat down and watched a single episode has become hooked.
Now I know that these things should be whispered, that I should have more civilized tastes now I’m at University. I should rave about The Wire or The Thick of It, but for me Gilmore Girls will always hold a place dear in my cerebral cortex alongside Ocean’s Eleven and Mallrats. It was at times hysterical, tragic, and sometimes so nostalgic that the sound of Laura Nyro’s Wedding Bell Blues or The Distiller’s Gypsy Rose Lee can send me right back home.
Stars Hollow, as fans of the show will know, is a meeting place for all kinds of strange circumstances. Why would Yo La Tengo or Sonic Youth decide to busk in its town square? What’s so special about Babette’s ankles? Why is Kirk suspended from a box? All questions that are answered within the show. Kirk, alongside other characters such as Taylor, Michel or Mrs Kim, is one of many characters which you simply would not find in another show, in another town and especially not in another drama. The show that made Time Magazine’s top 100 shows of all time certainly earned it.
But mostly Gilmore Girls is a show about the bond between mother and daughter. In it you will learn to love and hate and love Emily Gilmore. You will come to judge, agree, and yet disapprove of Lorelai Gilmore. You will cry with joy when, after an impromptu encounter with Jess Mariano, Rory Gilmore finally pulls her life back together. And, inevitably, you will wish your relationship with your mother was like that.
