South Park is back! The 14th season of this long running animated comedy kicked off with its take on high-profile cheating in ‘Sexual Healing’ and a look into literary critique in ‘The Tale of Scrotie McBoogerballs’.
“Why would a man who is famous and makes tons of money use that to try and have sex with lots of different women?” That’s the question posed by the CDC as they try to prevent a potential sex addiction epidemic in South Park’s season opener. The episode begins brilliantly, with the boys playing on a Tiger Woods EA Sports Xbox game. The moments whilst they are playing this game are pure comedy gold, with remarks like, “I got the Pre-Nup Powerup!” and “press ‘X’ to lie to the cops!”.
The episode didn’t let up from there onwards. Any fans who’ve been waiting for a comprehensive attack on cheating celebrities will be satisfied. As well as Woods, Bill Clinton, David Letterman and Charlie Sheen were some that South Park focussed on. This episode served as a very solid beginning to the season for Trey Parker and Matt Stone. I must say I wasn’t all that ecstatic about the way that it ended. But any fears that I may have had for this season were long gone after I’d seen the second episode, ‘The Tale of Scrotie McBoogerballs’.
This episode was an absolute South Park classic. It had me laughing out loud uncontrollably - to the extent that I was reaching for the pause button to give myself time to recover! Only South Park can make being vulgar for the sake of being vulgar work. And, somehow, amongst all the vulgarity, it still managed to have a message. It cautions against reading too much into things, the episode’s story follows the boys‘ attempt to create a book that is so disgusting it will get banned, hence, ‘The Tale of Scrotie McBoogerballs’.
The book gets a very positive critical reception and soon becomes a bestseller. Leading to people reading far too much into the subtext of a book that was written only with the intent of being as outrageous as possible. Throughout, there’s a crude portrayal of Sarah Jessica Parker as a “moose” (eventually killed by hunters whilst wearing antlers!), more projectile vomiting than I could handle and a spot-on representation of the vacuous Kardashian family.
Two episodes in. South Park Season 14 is looking to be great. And the fact that it’s following 13 other great seasons means I’m not worried at all. All that’s to be done now is look forward to the next episode!
