2010 Primetime Emmy Awards - Nominations: Part 2

Emmy Award 2
Monday, 19th July 2010
My look into the Emmy nominations continues with an overview of the nominees in the Outstanding Supporting actor and actress categories and for Outstanding comedy and drama:
  • Outstanding supporting actor in a comedy

Nominees: Chris Colfer (Glee), Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother), Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family), Eric Stonestreet (Modern Family), Ty Burrell (Modern Family), Jon Cryer (Two And A Half Men)

Chris Colfer
Chris Colfer

Recognition for three of Modern Family’s actors seems only fitting for the show that I’m yet to hear a single bad thing about and Neil Patrick Harris consistently provides laughs on How I Met Your Mother, even when (especially recently) the rest of the cast struggle to do so. I’m really pleased for Chris Colfer’s nomination, and although I love his character on Glee I think it’s unlikely he’ll win. Despite winning the award last year, I’m unconvinced by Cryer’s chances.

Prediction - Neil Patrick Harris (the HIMYM star has been nominated four times now - it’s about time his consistent performances on the show were rewarded with a win)

My Personal Pick - Chris Colfer (I really have enjoyed the first season of Glee, and Colfer’s brilliant portrayal of Kurt has been a large part of that)

  • Outstanding supporting actor in a drama

Nominees: Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad), Martin Short (Damages), Terry O’Quinn (Lost), Michael Emerson (Lost), John Slattery (Mad Men), Andre Braugher (Men Of A Certain Age)

Hopefully Lost will be given love by the Emmy voters, and with both Emerson and O’Quinn nominated in this category, one of them has got to come away with the award. Aaron Paul is also a possible contender for the win - with his work on Breaking Bad in much need of Emmy recognition. But, in truth, I can’t see this award going to anyone who hasn’t spent the last six years on the island.

Prediction - Terry O’Quinn (he’s literally been playing two separate characters this year, his work on Lost has been incredible... and he’s won before)

Michael Emerson and Terry O'Quinn
Terry O'Quinn & Michael Emerson

My Personal Pick - Either Michael Emerson or Terry O’Quinn (sorry, I’m a Lost fan, there’s no way I’m going to pick between these two. They’re both previous winners and they both equally deserving of another Emmy for their work in final year of the show)

  • Outstanding supporting actress in a comedy

Nominees: Jane Lynch (Glee), Julie Bowen (Modern Family), Sofia Vergara (Modern Family), Kristen Wig (Saturday Night Live), Jane Krakowski (30 Rock), Holland Taylor (Two And A Half Men)

The nominations here were mostly quite predictable, Krakowski, Wig and Taylor aren’t exactly surprising picks. It’s great to see Modern Family recognised again with Bowen’s nomination. But honestly, if this award isn’t Lynch’s it’ll be a complete travesty, she’s a huge part of Glee becoming such a huge hit.

Sue Sylvester
Jane Lynch as Sue Sylvester

Prediction - Jane Lynch (the character of Sue Sylvester is consistently the funniest thing about Glee and Lynch portrays the role perfectly)

My Personal Pick - also Jane Lynch (for me, Lynch is the most enjoyable aspect of one of my favourite shows this year - she seems like the obvious choice for the win)

  • Outstanding supporting actress in a drama

Nominees: Sharon Gless (Burn Notice), Rose Byrne (Damages), Archie Panjabi (The Good Wife), Christine Baranski (The Good Wife), Christina Hendricks (Mad Men), Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men)

It may be her tenth Emmy nod but it’s just as deserved as any other - Sharon Gless has been nominated for her role in Burn Notice, where she does a brilliant job. The picks from Mad Men were both quite predictable, and it’s not at all a surprise to see Byrne nominated. However, I think that the winner will come from one of the actresses of The Good Wife.

Prediction - Christine Baranski (she’s an important supporting player on The Good Wife - which means she has a very good chance of winning here)

My Personal Pick - Sharon Gless (Madeline Westen is one of the best acted roles of Burn Notice, the development of the character has been incredible - and it’s about time the show got Emmy recognition)

  • Outstanding comedy

Nominees: Curb Your Enthusiasm, Glee, Modern Family, Nurse Jackie, The Office, 30 Rock

I highly doubt that 30 Rock’s winning streak is going to end, the Emmy voters obviously favour the show. For the most part, the nominations here were rather predictable - and I feel the winner is predictable too. The Office may also be a competitor for the win with both Modern Family and Glee as possible dark horses.

Prediction - 30 Rock (it’s won for the past three years - there’s little to indicate it won’t do it again)

My Personal Pick - Glee (as one of this year’s standout new shows - I feel that Glee’s first season is certainly deserving of an Emmy)

  • Outstanding drama

Nominees: Breaking Bad, Dexter, The Good Wife, Lost, Mad Men, True Blood

Dexter
Dexter

With the exception of True Blood, I think most would’ve correctly guessed these nominations. Mad Men may have won this award for the past two years, and whilst it wouldn’t be surprising to see it to win again, there is some very strong competition this time round. I see Breaking Bad, Dexter and Lost as the clearest possible contenders here, although the actual winner is tricky to predict.

Prediction - Dexter (Dex is picking up support, and an Emmy would be a fitting reward for the first year of real widespread critical acclaim for the show)

My Personal Pick - Lost (shows don’t often win with their final season - The Sopranos is one to note - but, I personally feel that Lost had a truly exceptional year and will have a long-lasting legacy, to add another Emmy to that legacy would feel very justified)

That’s it from me and my predictions, the 62nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards will take place on August 29, 2010.

I recognise Christine Baranski only from The Big Bang Theory, as Leonard's mother - this makes me want to look up more of her stuff, hopefully with some more dramatic elements to it.
