FX’s screenings of Dexter from the first episode have led me to become very addicted over the space of a few months. So it is with delight that I welcome (finally!) their screening of season four, almost a year after it was broadcast in the US. Given the action already encountered in the first episode, I can tell we’re in for what could very well be the best season yet.
As someone who prefers the later incarnations of Dexter – the more relatable run-of-the-mill good guy who happens to be a serial killer rather than the serial killer who happens to work for the police department – I’m enjoying the direction the newest season has taken. We have a spin on the traditional “having it all” arc; the juggling of different aspects of one’s life in today’s busy world. Usually that’s a job, kids, spouse, extended family, financial woes...the formula is pretty straightforward. As always, Dexter takes these familiar elements and twists them into something more sinister, yet darkly comic too.
As we see our homicidal hero live his day-to-day life, we notice that something’s wrong – there’s a fantastic scene with bits of the title sequence re-shot, yet everything is off; a stained shirt, a broken shoelace and a rogue mosquito. Things aren’t quite right in the world of Dexter Morgan. Now he’s not just juggling a girlfriend, a job and a killing hobby – he has a baby son and a wife, which means he’s sleep-deprived and falling behind at work. This will no doubt be a recurring theme and his main obstacle this season. That, and the intriguing Trinity killer introduced to us as “the most successful serial killer to ever get away with it”. Apart from our Dexter, of course. (It’s worth noting that John Lithgow a.k.a. Trinity walked away with an Emmy this past weekend for his role, as well as a Golden Globe earlier this year. This build-up makes me anxious to see what he’s made of...)
There have been some surprising twists for the strong supporting cast; Maria LaGuerta and Angel Batista’s relationship appears to have become more than friendly (about time!), and season two’s Detective Lundy has re-appeared in Deb’s life – just as she’s settling down with former C.I. Anton. No doubt more great material for Jennifer Carpenter to handle (someone give this woman an award already!).
All in all things are looking promising – and seeing as this season’s been widely praised as Dexter’s best, I can’t wait to see what more is to come!
