Lois Cameron explains why this series is much more than your average cosy period drama.
The last episode of this series sees Sherlock and Moriarty attempt to solve the final problem with devastating consequences.
With major cast changes afoot, Jacob Martin ponders whether Being Human can live up to its own scarily high standard.
Matt Cardle
Best moment: Emotionally-charged ‘First Time Ever I Saw Your Face’ (Bootcamp)
The odds-on favourite, Matt’s already delivering goosebump-inducing performances with his effortless falsetto – not to mention his ability to press play on the tear ducts. Still, I can’t imagine how he’ll tackle more upbeat numbers.
Aiden Grimshaw
Best moment: Swaggery “Gold Digger” (Audition)
Likeable with a great recording voice, Aiden will have the young girls and guys swooning. He just needs to bring back that stylish spark from his first audition to stand out, and boy, do I want to come at that dishevelled mop he calls hair with a giant razor.
Nicolo Festa
Best moment: Whenever he’s not speaking
Credit to him, he possesses a caramel instrument, and his soundbites will undoubtedly make great live TV. But come on…his ego wouldn’t fit in the Colosseum - who’s going to vote for him? The prettyboy looks won’t cut it for long.
Mary Byrne
Best moment: Astonishing ‘I (Who Have Nothing)’ (Audition)
The ‘SuBo factor’ will always garner votes from a sympathetic public, and her embracing attitude is refreshing. Yet while I enjoy seeing lovely talented people get their moment in the spotlight, I can’t wholeheartedly cheer for someone I don’t see having career longevity.
Storm Lee
Best moment: Earnest “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” (Audition)
There was a lot to like about Storm’s first audition – gritty voice, standing his ground and rock-solid determination. His image and grating quasi-American accent need a massive overhaul though as they scream ‘washed-up’, and his desperation is anything but endearing.
John Adeleye
Best moment: Bouncy ‘Billionaire’ shone a beam of light in an otherwise gloomy package of Over-28 performances (Judges’ Houses)
John has demonstrated his ability to sing a variety from ballads to current R’n’B. Problem? I just couldn’t remember him without some googling, and I can’t exactly envisage fans lining up to see him.
F.Y.D.
Best moment: Perfectly crafted ‘Begging’, which catapulted the dated Franki Valli track into a radio-ready masterpiece (Judges’ Houses)
They’re gorgeous and have plenty of rhythm, with voices that blend together like a delicious smoothie. Could I actually pick them out of a crowd? No. As for personalities, reward if found...
Belle Amie
Best moment: ‘Faith’ was surprisingly authentic (Judges’ Houses)
Girl groups haven’t recently fared well (see: Kandy Rain, GirlBand, Bad Lashes) but ironically this bootcamp-constructed group is the most genuine and boasts four excellent voices. Although they need to prove consistency and identify their niche in the music market to stick around.
One Direction
Best moment: Um…still waiting?
They’re five Justin Biebers who can hold a tune – thousands of screaming tweens are already flexing their speed-texting fingers. However they have zero chemistry, ‘Torn’ was school talent show amateur (those ‘ooos’ were painful) and poor Zayn constantly looks like his pet just died – this project’s a ticking bomb.
Rebecca Ferguson
Best moment: Her raspy ‘A Change is Gonna Come’ (Audition)
Rebecca’s old-school voice delivers shivers with every breathy note. She carries herself elegantly, not to mention she’s simply beautiful. Of all the contestants though, she seems the most likely to fall apart at any moment – the critical public eye may break her.
Katie Waissel
Best moment: Her quirky style, including polka dot eyelashes and innovative use of pearls
Katie knows who she is; she’s bubbly and jazzy. But then there’s the backlash…negative press about a record contract, her crumbling first and last auditions, the Marmite personality, and her shaky voice...her reputation may destroy her chances.
Cher Lloyd
Best moment: ‘Viva La Vida’ (Bootcamp) – “I hear Jerusalem/Bells are ring-a-dinging…”
Embodies everything I love about these sometimes infuriating programmes – a rough diamond oozing creativity. Nobody expected tonsillitis to halt her in her tracks the way it did, but I have high hopes. Though girl needs a make-up tutorial, pronto.
The X Factor live shows start next Saturday at 7.40pm on ITV.
