- In a fairly predictable turn of events (and one that was already predicted by star Patricia Arquette), CBS have opted to cancel their struggling drama Medium, while three-time Emmy award-winning sitcom 30 Rock has been given an early renewal for a sixth season.
- It seems the term “series regular” is losing its meaning as The Big Bang Theory has promoted Mayim Bialik to that position. This news comes shortly after the announcement that Melissa Rauch has also been similarly promoted.
- Anna Friel will star in a new thriller for ITV1 entitled What To Do When Someone Dies. The three-part drama is based on the novel of the same name by Nicci Gerrard and Sean French, and Friel is to play lead character Ellie Manning.
- If you’re still reeling from the events of Californication’s stunning third season finale, you’ll be happy to hear that this week Showtime have released a trailer for season 4. They’ve also revealed the first trailer for upcoming new comedy Episodes, which sees the TV comeback of Friends star Matt LeBlanc, which will also air on BBC2.
- This week it was announced that Claire Danes will star in a pilot for Showtime. Homeland (from 24 executive producers Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa) will focus on an American soldier taken prisoner during the Iraq invasion of 2003. Danes will portray a driven CIA officer called Carrie Anderson.
- The line-up for the revamped Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Special has been announced. TV presenter Fern Briton, MP Vince Cable, impressionist and actor Ronni Ancona, Eastenders legend June Brown and the ever-present John Barrowman will all perform different dances to try and win praise from the judges and the audience in an episode expected to air on Christmas Day.
- CBS are developing a new comedy to star Rob Riggle. The currently untitled project will centre on an estate agent who ends up working for a nerd that he bullied in high school (the pilot comes from Saturday Night Live writer Robert Smigel).
- Starz have just released a trailer for the upcoming prequel to Spartacus: Blood and Sand (subtitled Gods of the Arena).
- Following recent Twitter indiscretions, Jason Manford has stepped down from his presenting role on The One Show. Current Strictly contestant Matt Baker is favourite to replace him.
- And this year’s festive Doctor Who special has been given the name ‘A Christmas Carol’. A rather enigmatic and intriguing preview for the episode, which will see Michael Gambon and singer Katherine Jenkins star alongside Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill, aired during last night's Children in Need broadcast.
- Saturday night sees the conclusion to TV miniseries The Pillars of the Earth (Channel 4 at 9pm).
- The second season of True Blood comes to an end on Thursday night at 11.20pm on Channel 4.
- Cult hit Peep Show returns for its seventh series this Friday at 10pm on Channel 4, although you can see the episode on 4od now.
- When Strictly headed to Blackpool last year, it was amazing, so you should definitely check out this week’s episode, which sees this year’s contestants travel to the Vegas of the North to compete in the Tower Ballroom. Catch it on Saturday at 6.30pm on BBC1.
- New drama Any Human Heart, starring Sam Claflin, Matthew Macfadyen and Jim Broadbent as the same character at three different stages in his life, starts on Channel 4 on Sunday at 9pm. Based on the novel by William Boyd, the four-part drama looks at the life of roguish Logan Mountstuart.
