Strictly Come Dancing: Final preview

Strictly: The Final
Saturday, 18th December 2010

As the eighth series of Strictly Come Dancing sadly draws to a close this evening, the strangest thing has happened: the best three dancers have actually made it to the final. It’s the first time since for a while that none of the finalists have hit the bottom two at any stage, so no-one knows who will finish where. Here’s my take on the highs and lows of their Strictly stories so far, and how I think those stories could end.

  • Pamela Stephenson and James Jordan

Best dance: Her Ghost-themed Viennese Waltz was as cheesy as the contents of Wallace and Gromit’s larder shelves, but it was beautifully danced and Pamela’s tendency to overact the dances actually worked in its favour.

Worst dance: The other theme week didn’t work out so well for Pamela, as her Halloween jive was a bit of a mess – lumpy, out of time and a bit slow.

Why should she win? She’s a beautiful dancer, and has defied expectations by being that rarest of combinations – both absolutely ancient and really very good. And we all thought that was going to be Felicity Kendall.

Why shouldn’t she win? Her mythical “journey” is nonsense – she started the show at the top of the leader board, dipped a little in the middle and is now up there again.

Prediction: I’d personally like to see her finish second, but I suspect she’ll be third.

  • Kara Tointon and Artem Chigvintsev

Best dance: There are many to choose from, but her tango was a thing of beauty: passionate, sharp and, quite frankly, in a different league from most of the dancing this series

Worst dance: Her jive was clearly under-rehearsed with limited choreography due to Artem’s injured neck.

Why should she win? Her jive really has been her only mis-step (and it wasn’t all that bad, comparatively speaking) and when she’s good, she’s miles and miles ahead of the pack, tackling more difficult choreography and making it look effortless.

Why shouldn’t she win? She’s been a bit under-the-radar this series, and her dances in the final (rhumba, waltz and American smooth) are all fairly safe choices.

Prediction: For me, she’s the best dancer left in the competition, and Artem has produced brilliant routines for her throughout the series, so I hope she wins – but I suspect she could still end up finishing second to Matt.

  • Matt Baker and Aliona Vilani

Best dance: His samba wasn’t worthy of a 38, but the more I think about it, the more I think it was a really great version of a notoriously difficult dance.

Worst dance: Last week, they evidently put most of their time into their tango, which paid off for that dance, but resulted in a very basic salsa that was easily his weakest performance to date.

Why should he win? Salsa aside, he’s consistently been near the top of the leader board, and he’s clearly putting his all into this.

Why shouldn’t he win? None of his dances have really managed to wow, and he may be taking it so seriously that he forgets to just let go and actually enjoy the dancing.

Prediction: He’s that nice Matt Baker off Blue Peter and Countryfile, so he’s still probably favourite to win despite never producing any stand-out dances.

See the Strictly Come Dancing final from 7pm tonight on BBC1, and then find out the winner in the results show from 9.05pm.
