The Yorker brings you the action live from the Varsity sport competition between York St. Johns and the University of York.
York dominated the varsity swimming from the off, winning comfortably 67 - 43 to take an eighteen point overall lead into tomorrow's fixtures.
University of York vs. York St. John
The terminology ‘absolute row over’ could not have been more appropriate in the opening hours of Varsity this Saturday afternoon. Due to rising river levels, the Varsity Regatta was cancelled; a relay erg-off was held in its place between the Boat Clubs of the University of York and St John’s. Regardless of the disruption to plans, both universities looked mean, keen and ready to row.
The Novice crews seized the opportunity to prove their worth in the week following their water race debut. UYBC’s Novice Men rinsed St Johns’ over a 5 kilometre relay, bringing us in comfortably with a time of12.11.6, to St Johns’ 13.05.3. Our Novice Women put in a courageous performance too, ending victorious with a striking forty two second lead.
Fast forward to the Senior relays, which increased to 8 kilometres in length; each crew member sprinting one lung-burning kilometre each. The Senior Men of UYBC provided an exhilarating competition against YSJBC, stealing a win with a margin of only five seconds. The Senior Women of York completed a clean-sweep against our local rivals, and they did it in style. Not only did they win; they won with a time of 28.02.8 against 30.54.8.
Overall an exciting start to Varsity, providing a valuable six points in the bag. UYBC have proved their point, they are in pursuit of further success this term.
