Nathan Blades shares his tips for successful Christmas shopping
James Tompkinson shares his experience of the all important Christmas shopping.
Are you looking forward to father’s day this year? I bet you are, who wouldn’t relish the chance to buy or make their Dad a present? I myself love the usual agonizing that accompanies the weeks in the build up to Christmas and birthdays, as my Dad is always the hardest person to get a present for. So hip, hip horray! for another occasion which requires hopeless wandering round the shops, usually ending up in the purchase a lovely pair of socks. Hopefully you’ve detected some sarcasm by now. In all seriousness, as much as I love my Dad, fathers aren’t generally the easiest people to buy presents for. So, with father’s day coming up this Sunday, if you feel like treating your Dad, here’s a list of present ideas to make your job a little easier.
For the music lover:
A CD of an artist he likes, though not particularly original, is a sure bet to make him happy (just check he doesn’t have it already!). If he’s mastered ipod technology, an itunes voucher will let him choose what he wants whilst showing you’ve taken a note of his interests. Alternatively, for some father-daughter/son bonding time, get him a couple of concert tickets.
For the outdoor sports enthusiast:
Pay attention to any complaints he makes about lack of equipment, if your Dad is anything like mine, he’ll appreciate useful presents the most. Failing that, if he doesn’t get to do try as many activities as he’d like, you could pay for him to have a taster session of sand kiting or kayaking, for example.
For the history buff:
History books will always go down well but they’re hardly the most imaginative gift. Treat him to a day out and go to one of his favourite museums. If you’re not planning on going home for a while, tickets to York’s Yorvik centre mean he’ll have to come and visit you. Depending on how serious he is about his history, avoid historical films; anything slightly misrepresented will ruffle his feathers.
For the gourmet cook:
A new piece of cooking equipment is sure to go down well. All the celebrity chefs have fine graters which are a great addition to any kitchen. If you want to splash the cash, a Le Creuset casserole dish is another great piece of equipment. Alternatively some good quality ingredients should go down well, think truffle oil or a good block of cheese.
For the metrosexual:
Everyone loves a bit of grooming. Treat him to a spa day or some good quality beauty products such as moisturiser or a shaving kit. If you’re low on cash at the moment, offer him your very own beauty expertise with a homemade facemask and cucumber slices for the eyes. Alternatively, decorate and personalise a soap dish for him.
