Anna Mckay shares a recipe perfect for celebrating Chinese New Year
Laura Reynolds reviews the latest arrival to the York cafe scene
Anna Mckay tempts us to break the new year healthy eating streak.
Just 4 days until Christmas..get in the mood with some festive nosh!
We left York Art Gallery behind us and kept going straight down Bootham street. After a few minutes walking we saw a superb old building on the right. Through bush branches, the title “The Churchill” was seen.
We went straight to the huge entrance doors over which three stars could be easily noticed. The doors were huge, but this should come as no surprise as the building was built around 1827 and was an example of Georgian mansions. We entered the building, ready to experience something new and probably luxury.
Luxurious – this word best describes the interior. The restaurant itself is not big at all. However, small tables, candles, huge windows and an old piano in the corner create a really cosy atmosphere.
The waiter came and asked if we wanted something to drink. I knew that green tea was definitely not the most popular drink in this country, however, I decided to give it a try and asked for it. For at least ten minutes we were reading the menu and thinking what to order when suddenly the waiter came back and in a confused voice told me that unfortunately they did not have any green tea. Yes, I managed to make the waitress look for that tea for even ten minutes and finally admit that despite being a really good restaurant they did not have one simple thing which I had asked for.
Luckily, everything went well after that. I ordered peppermint tea, market fish of the day and apple and vanilla crème brûlée ; my friend ordered rare breed pork fillet and a selection of homemade ice creams for the dessert. The fish was served in a shrimps sauce and it was more than savoury. The dessert did not disappoint me, either - it was totally mouth-watering. My friend was very happy with his braised pigs cheeks and ice creams, which were selected by the chef.
The menu, offering a selective of British food, is not very big; everything gets made the moment you make an order, and is served fresh. Three courses usually cost £25.95 but “The Churchill” offers an Early Bird Menu as well. If you order from 5pm-7pm from the other menu, then two courses costs £12.95 and three courses just £15.95. Believe me, the quality of the food is really worth the price. The restaurant has been recognised for the quality of its food - it earned its second Rosette (Rosettes are awarded annually to AA inspected restaurants for the quality of their food) in 2009.
I have to admit despite being a bit expensive, “The Churchill” is really worth a visit at least once. To be honest, this restaurant and service made my day and truly came up to my expectations.
