Anna Mckay shares a recipe perfect for celebrating Chinese New Year
Laura Reynolds reviews the latest arrival to the York cafe scene
Anna Mckay tempts us to break the new year healthy eating streak.
Just 4 days until Christmas..get in the mood with some festive nosh!
The three-legged campus bar crawl is a tradition that all York students should be made to do at least once before they leave. It being my second time, the other night we decided to make it more interesting, a four-legged bar crawl, as in three of us tied together. You would think having two girls tied to each side of you would make for an enjoyable night but being in the middle really does suck. Also, toilet breaks are interesting...
First stop James and McQ’s. This bar definitely has the most traditional pub atmosphere of all the campus bars. It’s warm, cosy, and welcoming. The only thing missing to make it a proper village pub would be an actual fireplace. Well, maybe. All the times I’ve been in here it’s been pretty busy. Most campus bars will be busy at one stage of the night, as numerous socials storm through them before moving on to town but McQ’s is usually full of people that have just gone to hang out there. Which is cool.
Next, V-Bar. Which is seriously far from James when you’re tied to two people. Another great bar, its nice, comfortable, the drinks are cheap, and it always has a completely random social going on (DougSoc anyone?)
I don’t think anyone really needs to know anything more about The Courtyard. The Union bar, serves good food at reasonable prices, and now shows sporting events in glorious 3D. Always busy at any time of the day.
D-Bar. Re-vamped over the holidays so it no longer looks like a school canteen. The new leather sofas give it a kind of chic that no one ever thought D-bar could have managed. It’s massive, busy, and has the coolest bartenders. (Read: it’s the only bar where I know any of the bartenders.) D-Bar has just acquired B Henry’s old cocktail license as well and is now officially the only place to get cocktails on campus. Also during the day, D-Bar’s Pasta of The Day is always tasty and great value. Seriously, find me a place where you can get more carbs for £3.50, I mean it even comes with garlic bread.
Edge. Technically we didn’t go to Edge on this bar crawl, but it definitely deserves a mention. It’s my favourite bar on campus and the least frequented by most people. Don’t be intimidated by the fact it’s deep in postgraduate territory. Undergraduates, and even freshers are more than welcome here. It’s modern, clean, and good value and it really came into its own during the world cup season as they have the biggest screen on campus.
Undoubtedly, the best feature of Edge though is the balcony that looks over what my friends and I call ‘The Water Place’. (I know, they should get us to name everything right?) It really is beautiful and easily the best place to be on campus during the summer. If you don’t know what I’m talking about go for a walk around Wentworth, or find yourself a York prospectus. They’ll be photos of it in there, trust me.
Long live the Water Place.
