Eggnog
Christmas just wouldn’t be Christmas without this classic holiday cocktail. It’s not the easiest drink to make, and it does require some preparation, but the end result is definitely worth it. (This recipe makes around 15 servings)
Ingredients
- 6 eggs (separated)
- 6 tbsp fine sugar
- ¼ tsp salt
- 2 tsp vanilla essence
- 500ml brandy (although rum or whiskey can be used if preferred)
- 250ml milk
- 1 tsp nutmeg (and to garnish)
Instructions
- Beat the egg yolks, 3 tbsp sugar, nutmeg, salt and vanilla together until very thick and a light yellow colour.
- Slowly beat in the brandy and milk.
- Cover and chill over night.
- Before serving beat the egg whites to soft peaks.
- Gradually beat in the remaining 3tbsp of sugar until you create a meringue-like cream.
- Pour out the chilled brandy, top it up with the cream and then finish with a dusting of nutmeg.
Bucks fizz
After the complication of Eggnog, we bring you possibly one of the easiest cocktails to make – Bucks fizz. It’s perfect for those of you who still want to remain respectable in front of the family on Christmas day as you simply use Champagne and orange juice and adjust the strength accordingly.
Hot Toddy
Although not technically a drink associated with Christmas, this hot Scottish cocktail will warm the cockles of your heart as temperatures continue to get lower and lower this holiday season.
Ingredients
- Small amount of whisky (exact measurements depending on your taste)
- 1 tsp honey
- Boiled water
- 1 slice fresh lemon (or a splash of lemon squash)
- 1 pinch of nutmeg (optional)
- 1 cinnamon stick (optional)
- 1 clove (optional)
Instructions
- Put the honey into a mug and dissolve in a small amount of boiled water.
- Add the whisky, 1 to 2 tbsp is recommended (though that seems slightly stingy…)
- Stir the mixture, then top up with more boiled water.
- Add the cinnamon stick and clove and leave to stand for 5mins.
- Remove the cinnamon stick and clove and add the lemon.
- Stir well and serve with a sprinkle of nutmeg.
White Christmas
This cocktail is perfect for any leftover Eggnog, or simply a twist on the Christmas classic for those of you who enjoy a bit of Southern Comfort.
Ingredients
- 100ml Eggnog
- 2 tsp White Chocolate liqueur
- 5 tsp Southern Comfort
Instructions
- Stir the liqueur and the Southern Comfort into the Eggnog and serve in a martini glass for a classy Christmas treat.
Candy Cane
If creamy cocktails like Eggnog and White Christmas don’t float your boat then this fresh and minty cocktail might be for you. You can make it extra special by coating the rim of the glass with crushed candy canes, or by using strawberry vodka instead of your bog standard paint stripper.
Ingredients
- 60ml vodka
- 4 tsp white crème de menthe (or any mint liqueur)
- 100ml cranberry juice
- Ice cubes
Instructions
- If decorating the rim of the glass, place the crushed candy cane onto a plate, wet the rim of the glass with water, then rotate the rim in the crushed candy canes.
- In a cocktail shaker, combine the vodka, crème de menthe, cranberry juice and ice and shake well.
- Pour into your prepared glass and enjoy.
