Don't come to uni without... these DVDs

Anchorman

There’s a list a mile long of things you don’t want to be leaving at home, but among the top ten should be your DVD collection. Housemate film nights make a cheap night in and are a good way to get to know people. A few suggestions for the kind of thing you might want to have at hand...

The Funny One: Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. It’s not like this is a film no one will have heard of, but its fame is truly justified. Really good for a laugh and will have you catch-phrasing for the first few weeks of term at least.

The Tarantino One: Kill Bill, Death Proof, Pulp Fiction... You get the idea. These films are epic, fantastic and need to be seen. Choose one, or all of them... though maybe leave From Dusk Till Dawn until you know people a bit better... or at least don’t watch it when you’re drunk.

The Epic Box-set: Buffy. This is just an example, bring whatever box-set you want. But how could you not love the Buff? Follow the slayer and her Scoobies through their adventures, love triangles and dates with demons. Box-sets have the advantage of being hours of viewing, and you can pick most of them up pretty cheap. Caution though; procrastination may ensue... and there are seven seasons.

The Fluffy One: Amélie. I’m not saying that Amélie is just fluff, but it’s pretty certain to be a crowd-pleaser and isn’t going to offend anyone. It’s quirky, fun and it’s in French, so you can justify watching it by telling yourself you’re learning something.

The Thrillingly Clever One: Shutter Island. You want something to completely hold your attention. You want to get away from everything else you’ve been thinking about. You want this film. Seriously slick and complete escapism, this one will have you glued to your seat.

Because there’s always someone who didn’t see...There are a lot of films in this category. There’s always that one great film that managed to escape someone, one of those “I can’t believe you haven’t seen that!” ones. Among them are Fight Club with its irredeemable cool; the horseplay of The Godfather; Donnie Darko and its eerie weirdness... The list is long. Pick your all time favourite and share it with your flatmates. Unless your favourite is something like The Love Guru or Glitter, in which case, maybe stick with one of the above.

Ultimately, anything you watch with a whole new group of people is going to be pretty great – you’ll see things you never saw before and find out things about actors you might wish you never knew. Whatever you watch, bring the popcorn.

P.S. ‘The One’: High Fidelity. The most important movie on the list. Not necessarily your favourite, but the one that will always make you feel good. You don’t know how it does it, or how you’ve sat through it twenty times, but it just makes you shine. The one you’d be most irritated to have left at home – the first thing you should pack.
